Secret Seven By Enid Blyton

Got it for my niece and she loved it!

Enid Blyton was a staple for many a child growing up. From tales from The Magic Far Away Tree to the Adventure Series of books. However in the 21st century are they feel dated? This appears to be the latest print of the paperback version of this book. The cover is illustracted with a looser more modern style and print within is clear and easy to read for all. There are limited illustration contained within of same vein of the cover art. At the end of the book there are some additional bonus facts about the Secret Seven, Enid Blyton, parts of an old illustrated (comic)strip, question about the story and information about other Enid Blyton books. Having fond memories of the Secret Seven and other Enid Blyton stories I bought this for my daughter. I read it to her at first and she was enthralled by the mystery and even tried to guess what would happen. She was also able to read the story herself after and try the quiz at the back of the book. Some of the words are challenging, and the style of writing is very different to many modern books, but no lesser enjoyable or relatable. Obviously there are elements that require an adult to fully explain as the book was written over 70 years ago. I have two gripes with this particular print. First is the illustrations. For me the style is rather uninteresting and lacking in any real detail. While you don't need many in a book like this, they do little to stimulate the imagination and if any detract from the story. Compared to George Brooks classic illustrations which helped to stimulate the imagination, there is no contest. Second issue is that you can buy a collection of the first 3 books for less(£4.99) than this one is currently priced(£5.94). The prices do vary, as I picked it up at £3.49, so it is worth checking the price of The Secret Seven Collection 1 first. Overall the Secret Seven is still a fun and engrossing book for kids. I would check the price of the collection before(see above) and as it potentially offers better value.
