I use this stand -Stagg SUVM-A100BK Foldable"A" Stand for Ukuleles, Mandolins and Violins, I have several other guitar stands. The Guitalele is (tenor)Ukulele size and I find guitar stands are too big-unless the guitalele is in it's case.

is the neck as wide as a martin, like a D-28 or fender strat or mostly for kids?

The neck is wide. Wider than a Ukulele, slightly less wide than a Classical guitar. Wider than any small/mini travel guitar I've seen. This is as close as you can get to a mini Classical guitar. I play Classical guitar and I love this. It is NOT a ukulele. It's a combo instrument, but more like a guitar than a uke. I would say that this is NOT made for kids, but kids can certainly use it and find it easier to use than a standard size Classical guitar.

since it's tuned up 5 half steps from a regular guitar, does it need special strings to take the extra tension?

I like two different tunings: F-sharp & G. Di’addario hard tension for F-sharp and regular tension for G; I own two different guileles with each one tuned accordingly.
