Could someone be totally honest and tell me if there are any usable tones with this unit out of the box?

Not too many; but... you can create any tone (patches) with any combination up to 6 effects in the chain with very detailed settings using the HX Edit software, not only with effects, you also can use several Amps with your own IRs or if you prefer one of the Cabs availables. And if you have your own analog pedals, you can also add them using the FX Loops

Is there a way to conncet a microphone to this?

You can connect a microphone using a 1/4" connection, however it may not give you the proper amount of volume. May be easier to connect to a pre-amp first, before running to the HX Stomp.

Can I use my helix rack presets?

No, the Helix/Helix rack presets are a different file format than the HX Stomp, so they may not load as expected into your device.

Does this have the latest 3.5 update loaded?
