I'm not sure what you mean by "tailpiece" . I had a question about this item and called Franke customer support directly and they were very helpful. Contact them at 800-626-5771.

Is this the drain and the basket or just the basket?

It is both. However I must say I really hate this design. The basket is extremely shallow and actually hard to grip.

This is by far the worst drain unit I have ever encountered

This is by far the worst drain unit I have ever encountered. The basket is much to shallow, it is also hard to grasp, and putting it back in place is hit or miss. Terrible design.
