I wear size 6 Wide shoes, will these inserts work for me or should I buy the regular 6 ?

I wear a regular 7 and my regular inserts fit perfectly. I'd recommend that you go ahead and get the wide for your size.

to wear with socks or not? seem to fit okay with sandals

I've always worn Dr. Scholl's support insoles with regular shoes (both tied and slip-on), and I always wear socks with them too. I've never worn sandals, but I doubt sandals could keep the insoles in place properly-- they could easily slide around, in my opinion. The insoles should fit firmly against the sides and heels of footwear. By the way, I like these insoles a lot-- very good support.

Can you wear them with sandals?

It’s possible to wear them with sandals as long as the back is closed & not a strap. Otherwise, they might work their way out the back as you walk.

How thick are the inserts at the heel?

Not much. A couple of millimeters. They have a dip at the heel. It will give arch support rather than on the heel.
