Pennington Smart Seed Dense Shade Mix Grass Seeds for Lawn, 7 Lb

The seeds did not sprout quickly, but we figured out that the sprinkler system was washing the seeds away with its force. With a little modification of the water supply, we suddenly had surprisingly good new grass growth, and are delighted to finally have grass in the part of the lawn that NEVER gets direct sunlight. It was easy to prepare the ground, spread the seed, and follow up. We're delighted.

With several bare spots in my lawn, I decided to overseed in the fall for fuller, greener grass next spring. The photo was taken 8 days after planting and you can easily see new grass emerging. The spot in the photo was completely bare but other parts of the yard had some grass mixed with some bare spots. The Pennington grass seed mix did well in both areas. This mixture had fertilized included; I would have preferred just seed and no fertilize. Without fertilize already in the mix I could have matched it to what the soil test said I needed instead of what the seed company added for general purpose. Now I’ll have to wait until the grass is established and retest the soil to see what type of additional fertilize may be needed.

Good value for money. Grass slow in growing, but had a nice thickness. Good Quality. Nice texture. If you're battling between Scotts and Pennington for your next purchase, Pennington was the hands down winner for me. Would buy again.

Had a chronic problem area along the side of the house where it NEVER gets sunlight due to the shade from the building and some large trees. I had tried various other seeds and planting solutions. This is the one that finally came through! High quality seeds that germinated fully and provided a lush lawn. They take a while to grow.. not for the impatient among us. Plus make sure you use some peat moss to cover the seeds initially so they stay moist and don't get eaten by the birds.. But after a couple weeks the sprouts came up and within another week or two the lawn looked great and it's been over three months now and looks wonderful. We even had a large family party a couple of weeks ago and the lawn stood up to lot of foot traffic. Very happy with this seed and will use it again!

I had a very small patch of ground to seed. As in an approximately 10'x20' section. A 10lb bag of this grass seed advertises "up to 200 sq ft" coverage which would have been ideal. In reality, it barely covered a fraction of the space. The Pennington "smart patch" has a lot of "filler" - not exactly sure what makes up the filler but when you go to spread the seed you see that it is some kind of mixture that CONTAINS seed. A 10lb bag of all seed might have just barely covered 200 sq ft but with this stuff. I couldn't even come close to covering a third of the 200 sq ft. Even if I would have purchased 3 or 4 bags I doubt it would have given ample coverage for new seeding. I immediately went out and purchased a second bag of a different dense shade grass seed that had no filler. At some point after regularly watering for about a week, grass started to emerge. It may be that some of the Smart Patch seed is contributing to the grow, I can't say but I really cannot recommend it. Perhaps if you have an extremely tiny little patch of grass that was disturbed (like say a teeny tiny 6'x6' section) it might work.

Crappy, pure plain and easy to review, this product is lousy... I have tried with 3 different applications of this grass seed and supplier, every last time my grass died...not from a lack of water, the grass seed does sprout, but then, its starts to die, again I am watering twice a day, so its not from a lack of poor watering or missing a day...I will try to get a refund but I highly doubt Pennington will honor their product...special note: yea the price is good but so what, if you can't get a good result, the time and effort to grow a good lawn goes out the window, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

I would give zero stars, followed the instructions for planting that was listed on the bag and went above and beyond, watered for several days, it's been 14 days now and not one single seed has germinated of approximately 2k square feet I can't find even one blade of new grass I did contact the manufacturer through the Amazon return section, the company has returned the contact Email with a reference number, they want a whole list of information before they'll do a refund, I mean several Questions that require a return answer, one is a picture of the barcode on the bag ( will that got trashed the day I planted the seeds ) , I emailed them back and asked if they also wanted my first born child and my right nut,,, ridiculous, I told them to just keep the $30 and to keep their worthless products, too much of a hassle. Just go to tractor supply and get your seeds, but don't buy Pennington brands Update 03/24/2025 I suppose I'm gonna have to eat crow, I give it 5 stars,21 days later after planting and it appears that all of the seeds have germinated and looking very good. This stuff works fast and made a big difference in our yard. We recently had some work done, and the bobcat left parts of the yard completely torn up. It was nothing but mud, and I honestly was not sure how quickly it would recover. I put this down, and within about a week we could already see new grass starting to come up. That alone was impressive given how damaged the area was. The combination of seed and mulch really seems to help it take hold and get started quickly, even in rough spots. It is not fully grown in yet, but based on how fast it started, I am confident it will fill in nicely. I am already planning to buy more to finish the area. If you are dealing with bare spots or a yard that has been torn up, this is definitely worth trying.
