Can it play 4K Blu Ray ?

Not it can not play 4K Blu Ray. I too thought it was a rather weird omission by Sony. However, after reading more about why the drive is missing, it makes sense. Why include something that will raise the price of the hardware, when less than 10% of the user base has 4k television? In addition, there are not many people who actually go out and buy movies at full retail. Most users would rather stream their content. While I'm sure that having the drive would give it more immediate appeal, the drive will not be in prime demand for at least a few more years. And as we all know, 2 or 3 years from now, the next Playstation will be released.

Is the HDD user replaceable like the old PS4?

Also of note: Sony recently announced it's going to add external HDD support to the PS4 in its next firmware update.

Can someone with relevant hardware experience speculate if 4K BluRay playback is just a matter of a firmware update?

This depends on 2 things, hardware and software/licensing. If we ignore the software/licensing and focus on the hardware Sony just needs to be using at least a BDXL drive. These drives have been available since 2011. If they aren't using a BDXL drive or a more recent UHD drive then there is no way they can update the system to support 4K Bluray. If they are then its definately a possibility.

How big is it compared to the PS4 original

The original PS4 is 11 (w), 2 (h) and 12 (d) and the new Pro is 11.6 (w), 2.1 (h) and 12.8 (d).
