Spear & Jackson CSB75 7 1/2 Inch Carpenters Sliding Bevel

An Excellent Product and well worth the money

I got the 9 inch model on sale for $11 or so before tax. It looks and feels really nice. Real wood with brass bars inlaid into the top and bottom on each side. Good design, the brass will be tougher on those corners than wood. The blade locks up tight. There were some small burrs but nothing egregious. Really quite a nice tool.

I am into hand tool woodworking and need at least a couple of sliding bevel gauges for various tasks. I already had one (swanson i think) that has a knurled thumb nut and works very well. Sliding bevel is a pretty simple tool and one should not have to spend a fortune for this. One of the most critical features of a sliding bevel is to lock solidly else it compromises accuracy. Thumb nut locks very well but the wing nut here locks even better. However I experienced a major issue where the wings of the nut protrude far too much and makes it unusable to register against tight corners. I spent a few minutes to file the wings until they don't protrude too much. The picture posted is after I have filed the wings of the nut. I can still put decent finger torque and it works better. So,for the price point I don't mind it too much.

My work requires using period-correct tools from the early to mid 19th century. This is exactly what we have here. Spear & Jackson have been in the business for over 250 years, and this or something very much like it shows up in their early catalogs. Definitely "If it ain't broke don't fix it." Construction is solid with good tolerances and sturdy materials. Adjustment is simple, and the blade doesn't slip out of position. Some more recent innovations like set angles and integrated ruling might be nice, but again those are modern and minor.

Heavy and very well made. Wingnut for tightening is a good idea and holds the blade tight.

First off their customer service is horrible. I have reached out about their plane they sent me with zero reply. This gauge won't even stay tight when locked down.

Die Schmiege liegt gut in der Hand (jedenfalls in meiner), die Feststellschraube ist genau richtig, nicht zu leicht-, aber auch nicht zu schwergängig und greift gut, sodaß da nix wackelt. Da gibt es keine Kritik, deswegen die volle Punktzahl.
