These foam pads are great. FYI you can wash them out and reuse them. I do it all the time. With just dawn dish soap and let it air dry before using again. I keep 6 of the altogether and they last. Of course they don’t suggest this . They would lose money. But why waste your money when they can be reused so many times.

Like with any filter, these do need to be changed often. Depending on the cleaning i'm doing, these can last up to 2 weeks without cleaning. I will usually replace them than trying to clean them. But that's my personal choice. Some misconceptions people have about filters. 1. Do not change all the media filters within the filter at the same time. This will keep the beneficial bacteria. 2. Use a filter rated for twice the size of your aquarium. Example if you have a 10 gal aquarium then you need a filter system for a 20 gal. aquarium. 3. Do Not over crowd your aquarium. With a filter that is rated for twice the size of your aquarium, you can keep a couple more fish than you would be able to otherwise. Remember 1 inch of fish (grown size) for each gal. of water. Take substrate and other decoration into consideration when determining the amount of fish you can have. 4. Goldfish are pooping machines. They also get to be 4 in. or bigger. Do not keep in a 1 or 2 gal fish bowl. 1 goldfish needs about 5 gal. of water. There is a lot of information on the web if your not sure about what you can have and what you need.

Although this filter (c3) has many parts to buy and change these units are very nice. Granted they are just little pieces of foam, but at 5 dollars it was great finding them here, and not paying 12 bucks. You can get them other places online, but they are more expensive. As for stores like PetSmart, no they don't carry the C3, C4, any of the Fluval products. Very irritating. I suggest you order them way before you need them, because you won't find them without waiting for shipping. Order at least 2 at the 5 dollar price, because the c3 filter uses these very quickly, and they are hard to clean out, or reuse. EDIT* These foam pieces rinse out a few times with little fish debris in them, but after a while they start breaking apart, and becoming flimsy. Esp if you use hot water to rinse them. Save some money and buy Marineland Rite Size Filter pads. They last forever, and can be cut to fit perfect in any of the C3, C4 etc models. They collect just as much debris at a fraction of the cost and rinse better and last longer. OR you could buy these over and over and keep throwing five dollars plus shipping away.

Does a wonderful job filtering, has different layers to catch waste and sturdy so it does not fall apart quickly. Has done a wonderful job keeping my tank cycled. Just rinse it out once a week. I've had one of these sponges last a year now. Highly recommended.
