Cherished by millions of readers, this #1 New York Times bestselling novel is a powerful tale of perseverance and hope. Newbery Medalist Linda Sue Park interweaves the stories of two Sudanese children who overcome mortal dangers to improve their lives and the lives of others. A Long Walk to Water begins as two stories, told in alternating sections, about two eleven-year-olds in Sudan, a girl in 2008 and a boy in 1985. The girl, Nya, is fetching water from a pond that is two hours’ walk from her home: she makes two trips to the pond every day. The boy, Salva, becomes one of the “lost boys” of Sudan, refugees who cover the African continent on foot as they search for their families and for a safe place to stay. Enduring every hardship from loneliness to attack by armed rebels to contact with killer lions and crocodiles, Salva is a survivor, and his story goes on to intersect with Nya’s in an astonishing and moving way. Includes an afterword by author Linda Sue Park and the real-life Salva Dut, on whom the novel is based, and who went on to found Water for South Sudan. Review: GOOD NOVEL - "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park is a compelling and poignant novel that skillfully weaves together two narratives, telling the true stories of Salva Dut and Nya. Set in Sudan, the novel explores the harsh realities of life in the war-torn country and the incredible resilience of the human spirit. Salva's story, set in 1985, follows his journey as a "Lost Boy" escaping the violence of the Sudanese civil war. The challenges he faces and the determination he exhibits on his arduous trek to find safety and hope are both inspiring and heart-wrenching. The narrative sheds light on the struggles of those forced to flee their homes and the indomitable will to survive against all odds. In contrast, Nya's story unfolds in 2008 and focuses on the daily challenges of fetching water for her family. Nya's life is a stark portrayal of the water crisis in Sudan and the lengths people must go to secure this basic necessity. The dual narratives provide a comprehensive view of the impact of conflict and scarcity on different lives across time. Linda Sue Park's writing is accessible and emotionally resonant, making the book suitable for a wide range of readers, including young adults. The characters are vividly portrayed, and the alternating perspectives create a powerful narrative that keeps readers engaged. Overall, "A Long Walk to Water" is a thought-provoking and educational novel that not only informs readers about the struggles faced by people in Sudan but also inspires compassion and empathy. It serves as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of access to clean water for communities worldwide. Review: An Emotional and Inspiring Masterpiece! - I just finished reading A Long Walk to Water, and I am genuinely moved. This book tells a powerful, dual-narrative story that is both heartbreaking and deeply inspiring. Why this book is a must-read: Compelling Storytelling: The way the author weaves together the two stories—one from 1985 and one from 2008—is brilliant and keeps you engaged from start to finish. Educational and Eye-Opening: It provides such an important perspective on the history of Sudan and the daily struggles for basic needs like water. Inspiring Themes: At its heart, it is a story of incredible resilience, survival, and hope that stays with you long after the final page. Accessible for All Ages: While it handles heavy themes, the writing is clear and accessible, making it an excellent choice for both young readers and adults. This is more than just a book; it’s a perspective-shifting experience. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a story that is as educational as it is emotional.

Beautiful Story about Hope, Perseverance and Compassion
This story about how two lives intertwined is heartwarming. One perseveres patiently through great difficulties but never loses sight of what is important. The other, a child benefits from and appreciates the first character's perseverance and endurance. This is a beautiful story that teaches the value of persevering through trials, recovering from trials, and moving on to help others. I highly recommend this book for middle school to adult readers. It is very well written, easy to read, and absorbing. I enjoyed reading this book and I'm really glad for what I learned from it.

Good story
I almost felt like this was happening at the moment that I was reading it! This story made me feel that once I finished a chapter I just wanted to keep reading more and more chapters!!! This story was an amazing book to read that I would definitely tell others to read also! At the end it almost feels like and on-going story and that there should be another book to it, which I wish there was!

She like many other young people does not go to school
"A Long Walk to Water" is a novel by Linda Sue Park. Published in 2010, the novel is written to tell two separate stories which are brought together in the final chapter. The first story is about Nya, an eleven-year-old girl living in Southern Sudan who must make two long walks to fetch water for her family each day. The second story is based on the true life experiences of Salva Dut, who is forced to run away the war in Southern Sudan when he is eleven years old. The main character in this book is Salva Dut. He is eleven year old boy living in South Sudan. One day, he is at school when his village comes under attack. He among with other boys runs into the forest and never returns to his village. They become known as the "Lost Boys". They travel across the desert to a refugee camp in Ethiopia then in Kenya. He begins to learn some English. He is one of many chosen to travel to America to live with an adoptive family. After adjusting his life, he goes back Southern Sudan to help the people drilling wells and bringing water to remote villages. The other character in this book is Nya. She like many other young people does not go to school. She spends her day traveling several hours each way to bring water home to her family. She must do this in the morning and in the afternoon. She is still wondering if a miracle can happen one day. This book definitely held my interest. Although it was a bit confusing trying to understand how the two stories connected, but by the end of the book, the way that the author weaved the two stories of Nya and Salva together is incredibly powerful and moving. This story teaches lessons of compassion and perseverance and courage. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. It provides an incredible perspective on the definition of a hard life and is an inspirational read.

Beautiful True Story
I bought this book for one of my fifth-grade students. We read it together. It is a beautiful story of resilience and giving back. It invites the reader to reflect on the many blessings one has living in a peaceful country, and encourages the reader to find ways to make the world a better place. It is short enough for a slow reader to finish this book in about 5 weeks.

Gripping Story
Here is the review from my 12 year old daughter- Honestly one of the best nonfiction books out there. With its gripping storyline, it really brought light to what people needed to remember- the Sudanese civil war- and served as a reminder to always remember the lives lost. It felt real- as though it was happening right in front of me. And the thing is- it was real. It was very real. And it happened right in front of many people- many whose lives were lost, who saw their family, their friends die, the survivors who still live on with the trauma. But we are humans, and humans can hope. We can heal. And we can help. This book is a masterpiece- no lies, just facts, just the plain, clear truth.

Great book
I read the book in two settings. Such a great story about southern Sudan and the story of two children from two different tribes in southern Sudan. The story describes difficulties about finding clean water in the village. There are hopes in the story and have a nice ending. Remember A step at a time One problem at a time just figure out this problem Keep walking
