Is the consensus to order one size larger than you usually wear?

A: Not necessarily. It depends on various factors. in short: if you wear a whole size (comfortably-not for vanity) then order your size. If you are a half size, order up to the next whole size.

There a lot of conflicting answers to this question. Let me try to clarify for you. 
Sizing is, unfortunately, a huge con on the pro/con list when buying shoes online. 
In my experience, Crocs are NOT true to size. And because they come in 3 different footbed styles (NONE of which are identified in each of the different style listings here on Amazon), you may just need to try several pairs and return what doesn’t fit. I know, I know, absolutely a pain! 
Here’s why I say this: I wear a size 9.5w women’s shoe so based on reviews I ordered a size 10 in the Kaydee ll Leopard print. They are so long that there is an inch between the tip of my big toe and the end of the Crocs-I’m constantly tripping over them! Had worn them for a few days before this became an issue, so I couldn’t return them. Ordered a 9 in the same sandal: it fit nearly perfectly-just a smidge short because I prefer my foot to sit IN the sole, not hanging over the edge. Now, when I ordered the very same Kaydee ll in different colors (pink, teal), the 9 fit like an 8 and a 10 fit like a 9. Confusing, I know, but stay with me. Tried several (5) other styles of Crocs and found the same issue: certain colors of the same style fit much better than others! 
My advice: ***if you wear a whole size (comfortably-not for vanity) then order your size. If you are a half size, order up to the next whole size.*** 
If you have ordered from Amazon, returns are free (I believe), you’ll just be inconvenienced by the return process. I hope this helps. Good luck!

My son has an 8" foot. What size would work?  A bit on the large size is preferable.

my foot is 9 1/2" i got women's 9 my foot is at the very end of the shoe, probably should of order a 10, they run small
