Western Digital 4TB WD Red Plus NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD - 5400 RPM, SATA 6 Gb/s, CMR, 128 MB Cache, 3.5" -WD40EFZX

Threw this in my home server build and it detected immediately on the first boot with zero issues. Been running it for months now and temperatures look fine, no weird sounds, totally stable. If you are setting up a RAID array this is the obvious pick since the NAS specific firmware actually matters and is not just marketing.

I have been using these drives in my movie server my game server and my music server for many years now. Knock on wood I have not had one fail yet

Update: I finally was able to figure out how to get drive registered to get an RMA number. Once I figured this out everything else went smoothly. Then I got an app to check the HD again and it seems my problem was a previous power outage. Having never had this problem before, I wasn't expecting it. Anyway, I'm still a WD fanboy. Their return website is relatively painless once you figure it out. I rerated the HD to reflect these new developments. For WD40EFZX-68AWUNO... What a pain! Went to WD site to fill out warranty forms and it's not working right either. After a few crapped out hard drives from Seagate several years ago I went with WD. EVERY drive I have in service is now Western Digital. I put two of these in a Synology NAS and "drive 1" went kaput after 14 months. Buying another (68C6CNO) and hopefully WD will come through on the warranty if I can get it completed. WD warranty is most times pretty painless so I'm not really livid it's just that this eats up a couple of hours of the day when you're not set up to make returns. Oh well, things go wrong.

I bought one of these drives in like-new condition from Amazon Warehouse to replace a dead Seagate Pipeline drive in a satellite receiver/DVR. It's only been running for a couple of weeks but I just had to reiterate what most reviews here are stating - it is amazingly quiet and very fast! The original drive made quite a racket because the DVR is always recording but this one is barely noticeable. My only complaint is that the manufacturing date is in July of 2021 - almost 2 years ago - which cuts the warranty significantly. I looked up the warranty status on WD's support website and found that it expires in December of 2024 - only 18 months instead of 3 years as advertised. I don't know what manufacturing date the new ones are shipping with but if the warranty is important to you I would look for the date before opening the anti-static bag it comes in so you can return it unopened if necessary. You can also check the warranty status using the serial number that is printed on the box.

Reliability: I’ve been using the WD60EFRX 6TB drives in my QNAP TS-453A for just shy of 10 years, and honestly? I completely forgot they were still the original drives. That’s how quietly and reliably they’ve been doing their job—like the NAS equivalent of a dependable old friend who never calls attention to themselves but always shows up on time. They’ve been spinning 24/7 in a RAID 5 array, handling backups, media, and day-to-day tasks without a hiccup. Not a single SMART warning, not a whimper of protest, and no weird noises—just smooth, silent duty like clockwork. I only realized how old they were when I started planning my upgrade, and it hit me: these things have been running since before streaming 4K was even a thing. Western Digital nailed it with this one. If I could buy them a retirement watch, I would. But since I’m replacing them with the newer WD Red 10TB (WD101EFBX), I figured the least I could do is write a glowing eulogy—I mean, review.

I know this is a NAS drive, but from my reading, it should be fine to use it as a secondary drive in my desktop. It worked immediately after installing it in the case, no need for any software downloads. I don't notice any additional sound over my case fans. The reason I went with this drive was because I wanted CMR. Many other consumer drives of this size are SMR, which can slow down when files are repeatedly moved around on them. Due to the amount of reviews talking about warranty issues, I was a bit wary at first. Everything has turned out OK so far though. Mine was shipped and sold by Amazon, and arrived in a nondescript brown box with proper support packaging. I attached my CrystalDiskInfo screenshot showing that the drive I received was brand new, with a single power on, and no bad sectors. The internal serial number and the printed serial number matched, and allowed me to register easily for the 3 year WD warranty.

By the price point title, I mean that the cost per TB is the minimum for very large drives. That's all it means. One cannot really rate a hard drive for longevity until it has, indeed, operated "long". That part of the review is TBD. The drives were purchased for a network drive array that will be used to store favorite movies, music, and TV series. They are not configured as part of a RAID of any mode, but I did configure two of them as a data storage RAID for a different application. So the network drive server actually has several "drives", but all are composed of the same WD 6TB NAS drive. These drives are specifically configured for NAS operation. The network itself is a GB CAT 7 with all the peripherals capable of gigabit speeds. The drives easily keep up with multiple (3 to 4) users all watching different movies. No "hourglass" in sight! Provided that these things continue to operate at their current level, I recommend them.

This one has just replaced an old one which has been used constantly in my home media server since 2017. Nothing more than a confirmation of longevity of the old unit. I would expect the same from this one.

Je possède 14 wd red, de 3TB à 6TB. Depuis 2015, zéro panne. C'est un sans faute. Mais c'est un succès relatif peut-être pour vous, en fonction de votre utilisation par ex dans un NAS qui tourne 24/24. Mon utilisation est la suivante, je stock mes films dans les wd red pour les visionner sur ma Dune Solo 4K, donc ils n'ont pas un nombre d'heures de vol élevé.

Worked in my NAS recognised as soon as it was put in.

Initially had some doubts due to the negative reviews of disk being dead on arrival. Especially when I received all items packed in thin plastic. The boxes are arranged side by side but can freely move on the plastic. The hardisk on each box is secured firmly though by a hollow plastic. Fortunately, the DOA issue didn't happen to me. I've order 3 pcs of 4TB and all are woking and no issue found after doing smartctl. I registered as well on the WD website and it has a 3y out of region warranty as well. I'm planning to purchase another set but with bigger capacity again but still waiting for more discounted price.
