This is just what Don Winslow's readers would have ordered if they had known it was on the menu. In a few days Oliver Stone's cinematic version of Savages will be released. The anticipation level is high. Ben, Chon and O come to the big screen, with a fantastic supporting cast. So what do we want in the meantime? A prequel, one that tells us how several of our favorite contemporary literary characters came to be. Who were their parents? What were their families like? Who was at the center of the Association--the OC drug syndicate? Now we know. The Kings of Cool is as cool as the title; Don Winslow is exhibiting the chops that brought him to the pinnacle of contemporary crime writing. This is multi-generational narrative, but not the sort done by Edna Ferber. The style is part Ellroy, part Vachss--brief (sometimes a word or two) chapters; choppy line breaks; interpolated definitions and--for key scenes--the narrative shifts to screenwriting format. The lines are wry, smart, brilliant, laugh-out-loud funny and sometimes downright poetic. This is a one-reading book, but not just because of the suspense and the multi-layered plotting. You'll read it in one sitting because it is just so beautifully wrought. And it may just make the perfect movie. Some are already picking The Kings of Cool as the book of the year. It certainly deserves that title as of July 2. If you liked Savages, grab a copy and luxuriate. It's not the epic that is The Power of the Dog; it's not trying to be, though it is trying to create the world of drug trafficking through the experience of a handful of people. Basically it's a character study and some of our old, favorite characters, like Frankie Machine, are back in cameo roles. This is like sitting back in your easy chair, watching your favorite characters do what they do, but with a little more violence, a little more tension, a little more mayhem and many more great one-liners than usual. A terrific, don't miss, book.

Weil Savages (Zeit des Zorns) so endet, wie es endet, und weil sich Don Winslow, anders als Oliver Stone, nicht den (überflüssigen) Luxus eines alternativen Endes erlaubt hat, blieb ihm also nur ein Prequel, um die Story zu auszubauen. Und wie er sie ausgebaut hat! Das Folgende ist eher gedacht für Leser, die Savages schon kennen bzw. sich in Rezensionen grob informiert haben. Ich würde ohnehin unbedingt empfehlen, Savages zuerst zu lesen, denn was wir in Kings of Cool über die Eltern von Ben, Chon und O dazulernen, lässt sie in Savages merkwürdig blass und uninteressant erscheinen. Deswegen kann ich mir auch kaum vorstellen, dass Don Winslow beim Schreiben von Savages schon Prequel-Pläne im Hinterkopf gehabt hatte. Kings of Cool erstreckt sich über drei Zeitabschnitte, zwischen denen der Autor virtuos hin und her springt: Die Sechziger mit der ersten „Blüte“ der kalifornischen Hippie- und Drogenszene, die Achtziger, in denen die Eltern von Ben und Chon – so viel sei angedeutet – eine maßgebliche Rolle in diesem Wirtschaftszweig spielen, und 2005, der Beginn des Business’ unserer beiden Freunde. Gegenspieler sind diesmal nicht die Mexikaner, sondern die kalifornischen Kingpins, sozusagen die Bösewichte der ersten Stunde, die wir in den Rückblenden ausführlich kennenlernen. Mehr soll zur Story nicht verraten werden, vielleicht noch, dass sich die amouröse Konstellation Ben-O-Chon, bei deren Beschreibung Don Winslow in Savages alle Register gezogen hat, hier nur vorsichtig andeutet. Amüsant die Cameo-Auftritte zweier Helden aus früheren Romanen, Frankie Machine und Bobby Z. An Überraschungen ist auch sonst kein Mangel, und dass gelegentlich der Zufall aushelfen muss, um die Geschichte weiterzubringen, sei absolut verziehen. Der Stil ähnelt dem von Savages: kurze, stakkatoartige Sätze, gelungene Wortspiele und bravourös ignorierte Gepflogenheiten bezüglich Satzbau, Schriftbild oder Interpunktion. Die Verwendung von BAHWA (Bisweilen Allzu Hip Wirkenden Abkürzungen) ist gegenüber Savages aber dankenswerterweise rückläufig. Gelegentliche Einsprengsel in Form eines Drehbuchs regen das Kopfkino an. Wer nach einem an- und aufregenden page turner sucht, ist mit Kings of Cool (und mit Savages sowieso) hervorragend bedient. Und jetzt muss ich endlich Power of the Dog lesen!

Pour ceux qui ont lu le livre Savages du même auteur, ce livre donne un plus de profondeur aux personnages. Le style est direct et le contenu assez violent, âmes sensibles s'abstenir. Un excellent polar, très prenant.

Great story telling by the author. I've read about 8 books from this author and he hasn't disappointed me.
