I don't understand the need for the resistors. they don't step down the voltage and the led will only draw the amperage it needs without them?

You cannot connect an LED direct to any voltage without a resistor, as it is not a linear resistance. Below a certain voltage, it won't conduct or light, but above a certain voltage (between 2-3 volts for typical LEDs) the LED will suddenly conduct large amounts of current resulting in very high power dissipation. Even if the LED does not burn out quickly, it will run hot. The resistor is installed in series with the LED to prevent that. I have used various colors of pre-wired EDGELEC LEDs available on Amazon, and they work very well off a range of voltages from 7 to 12 volts, and draw around 10 mA. The White LEDs are high efficiency, and are surprisingly bright, such that a single one could be used for a flashlight.

what gauge wire are they?

Looks like 24 or 26. I have to double the wire to use in a crimped connector like a power pole.
