How do i protect my alternation from this drawing too much current i have a large lifepo4 battery bank?

That’s exactly the point. If you use it to charge from a flood/AGM starting battery, it will limit the draw to the D.C.-D.C. charger rating. So if you have a 60A alternator, choose 20-30A charger

I dont want my battery to be used to start my rv. does the charger contain a backfeed diode (to prevent power coming from the rv battery)?

A reverse current from the RV battery cannot occur. In addition, the Orion-TR Smart is isolated galvanically separated.

I’ve connected the input terminals to the starter battery and confirmed 14.4 v at the input terminals. Why won’t my unit turn on? Defective unit?

There is a green connector inside the box to connect to the "remote" on the left side of the unit. It cannot run if there is a discontinuity between the 2 pole of this remote.

Does this have a built in battery protect, or do i need to add this separately?

Not sure what you mean. It does monitor voltage levels and you can set specific charging profiles. I believe it may have reverse polarity protection in case you hook up the battery wrong.
