Is the purple oiled color more of a deep red or red/brown color?

It's more of a deep Berry color with minimal brown undertones. So it's comparable to the stain a squashed blueberry would make on your clothes, to be exact.its a nice purple, not at all loud.

How wide can the shaft opening expand to?

I have average calves and it is comfortably snug when I wear over leggings. From there you can loosen a bit at the top. I love these boots for the simple reason they are so comfortable and fit nicely over leggings.

Will this fit a wide calf, say 17 inch calves?

Yes, I think these will fit 17-inch calves. I have 14.75 inch calves and I have to cinch the strings in the back to get them to be even a little tight in the calves. With 17 inch calves, you would simply loosen the strings a couple of inches which would also show more of the back of the leg which is a nice look. I recommend these booth for comfort and style.

How tall are these boots?

From back of heel (not including wedge) to top is 13 inches. From back heel (not including wedge) to just below the shoe laces is 9 inches a day that point around is 12 inches. You can loosen the fit from above the shoe laces. I my telling you this part give you an idea how they fit. I love the boots, they fit nice and snug on me... I am 5’ 1”, and 115 pounds.
