can it mix cake batter?

It can. But even the low speed on this thing is far too fast. Unless you want to be covered in flour, you should whisk the batter first by hand till it's just incorporated, and then a few seconds with the machine to get the lumps out. Because it's so fast/powerful, you have to be careful you don't over-mix the cake which could make the resulting cake tough.

I would say 2 cups ... it's not big. You could possibly get 3 cups in there ... but it's going to be really, really full. This little thing is super handy for small jobs ... I love it!
