I purchased a KBGV Select in "polished silver" because it was on sale (less than $200 for Prime day). What a steal, right? Ha. No, these guys are trying to dump inventory because they know how poorly they were built. I was very hesitant to buy one of these, even with the deep sale price, because there are sooooooo many reviews calling out chipped hot plates, switches just "dropping out" of their slots and dangling inside the chassis, and even used/dirty/broken parts on arrival. I got mine today and I made sure to video record the unboxing in case the Amazon customer service bots try to give me a hard time about returning it - which I am doing (my wife just finished completing the request for a UPS drop-off). Anyway, I opened it up and did NOT see any chips on the hot plate. "Jackpot!" I thought to myself. I sat the unit on the counter and admired how nice it looks. It does look nice, in my opinion, as a big paper weight. But I digress... I went to test the switches. Power switch is nice and snappy, and clearly turns "on" and "off." I also can hear the clicking sound people mentioned in reviews, which can help get your attention when the heating element turns off (or so people say). All good there. Then I went to check the brew selector switch - the one that lets you choose between "half pot" and "full pot" (yes I know that's not exactly how the function works but I'm not sure how else to describe it). When I press it to the "half pot" side, it kind of clicks a little and stays in place, but it's "squishy" feeling. As in, the switch isn't firmly secured in the slot. I made sure not to push too hard because I didn't want to dislodge it. When I press the "full pot" side of the switch, it's very "muddy" feeling and doesn't click or "engage." If I push it a little harder it does stay on "full pot," but otherwise it pulls back over to the "half pot" side. I just don't trust it. It doesn't look like an assembly issue. It seems more like they use switches that tend to be defective, or they aren't using compatible parts. The switches look to be pretty similar, but they're installed at a 180 degree orientation relative to each other. I don't know if maybe one of them is installed upside down? I'm not going to take anything apart to find out because I don't want to screw up the return process or make things difficult. But maybe that's the case. After all I've read about Technivorm Moccamaster products, I thought this was going to be my "forever coffee machine" (sorry I've watched too much HGTV). But it's junk. Like actual junk. I was going to buy one of the new hi-tech machines with a bloom function and temp control, but I thought to myself "Nah, I'll get the moccamaster because they sound like the Miele vacuum cleaners of the coffee world." Forget it. Now I know how Alaska airlines felt when that 737 door plug blew out. Maybe former Boeing employees work at Technivorm.

I’d been limping along with a generic $9 drip coffee maker for years, always putting off the research to find a good one. This year, I’d had enough of that cheap maker. I dove deep into researching SCA-approved brewers, binged YouTube videos, and read tons of reviews. After all that, I settled on the Technivorm Moccamaster, mainly because it’s not made in China, has a solid warranty, and offers parts and service through a U.S. location. At first, I was leaning toward the thermal carafe model. Coffee nerds kept saying glass carafes give coffee a burnt taste if it sits too long. I know that taste from a lifetime of glass carafe makers, but I rarely let coffee sit that long. If I do, I just brew a fresh pot. Plus, glass carafes are way cheaper to replace and easier to clean than those glass-lined thermal ones, which are also breakable but cost a lot more. The color choice was tough. I was leaning toward a safe, neutral one, but then I read a review (can’t find it now) that basically said: if you’re torn between a boring color and a bold one, go bold—you won’t regret it. That pushed me to pick the turquoise, and I’m obsessed with it. No regrets! I’m not a clean freak and never bothered to thoroughly clean my old coffee makers after every use. But this Moccamaster? It feels like it deserves the extra few seconds to stay spotless. It’s built to last years, and I want to keep it looking nice. Since I couldn’t see one in person before buying, I was a bit nervous about the plastic quality some folks complained about. Honestly, I don’t get the fuss—the plastic feels solid enough, not cheap or flimsy, and every part is replaceable through Amazon or Technivorm. The glass carafe does seem a tad thin, so I’m sure I’ll break it eventually. The carafe lid pops on and off super easily for cleaning. The water reservoir lid feels a little loose, but it’s not a big deal to me—what am I locking up in there? Heads-up: Moccamasters need coarsely ground coffee. If you’re using pre-ground grocery store stuff, you might want to pick a different SCA-approved brewer. I used to be a pre-ground coffee person too, but I switched to hand-grinding specialty beans right before getting this. I’ve accidentally ground too fine a couple of times, and it almost overflowed the filter basket—way too close for comfort. Some coffee gurus say to stir the grounds while brewing for the best extraction. I wasn’t planning to bother, but I’m usually nearby (I leave the filter lid off during brewing). When it’s down to about a cup left, I’ll give it a quick stir if I notice dry grounds near the filter basket handle. A few times, I forgot to stir until it was done, but when I checked, all the grounds were wet anyway. The coffee tasted just as good to me—I couldn’t tell the difference. Is this the ultimate coffee maker? I don’t know. But it feels well-made, I love how it looks, and the coffee it brews is fantastic. I think it’ll last for years. Would I pay full price? Probably not. Did I wait for a sale? Nope. I got an Amazon store card with a $100 instant gift card, which made it feel like a solid deal for a coffee maker I’m thrilled with.

I've been looking at this manufacturer for 20 years -- ever since Cooks Illustrated rated it the best. I finally bought one. The bottom line is it makes very good coffee, but I don't love the machine yet. I expected fussy, but after using its closest competitor (Bonavita) for years -- which is exceedingly easy to use and also makes very good coffee -- this seems a little much. There is a loose, separate cover for both the water and the grounds that have to be removed and placed somewhere (on my crowded counter) while you add water and grounds. The transfer arm that transports the water to the grounds is removable, and while it seems fairly secure, since it's press-fitted to the reservoir's silicone seal, I'm concerned that over time it will loosen and lose its seal. The brew basket has to fit into pegs, and has a spring-loaded release trap that I expect to wear out eventually. It's also complicated to clean, due to its design. The glass carafe has this bizarre funnel lid that goes to the bottom of the carafe, and is awkward to maneuver when filling it with water, so I just remove it. The warming plate surface material (some kind of plastic) has a fair amount of friction, and since one has to push up another spring-loaded device when slipping the pot under the basket, it makes it more difficult to get the pot in. It tends to bind, and you have to wiggle the pot a little to get it under. They should improve the plastic - make it more slick -- or just switch to stainless steel, which would have more slip. Washing all these individual parts will be a chore, and I think they have to be hand-washed. Yes, I'm being fussier than the coffee maker itself, but all these things add up in the morning when you have 5 minutes to get out the door to work. I've only been using it for four days, so I'm sure I'll get more used to it, and maybe my morning grumpiness may improve. The only true flaw I've found so far is the carafe spout lip. It has a low velocity pour speed, or it will break and dribble down the pot. The Bonavita can be poured nearly as fast as one wishes, as the lip is very well designed. For coffee it's not that big of a deal, as one usually pours it fairly slow, but I always get water on the counter when filling the reservoir with the carafe, and it's irritating. I'm going to use it a while, and if it continues to be a problem, I'm going to assume it's a bad carafe -- and not design -- and ask for a replacement. OK -- that's the bad, and yes I was very nit-picky, but this is a $350 coffee maker that has been touted as the finest home brew for decades -- and I think it deserves a picky review. On the good side, it's a beautiful design, over-all. Very cool look. Besides the issues, above, it does seem sturdy and well made. The plastic cover on the reservoir seems a little cheap, but I'm being really picky now. Overall it seems well made. The most important thing is the coffee taste, of course, and it does make damn good coffee. With the same beans, comparatively, it is not quite as extracted as the Bonavita, but the coffee seems more nuanced. I'll try it with other beans -- maybe go head to head with the Bonavita-- and get back to you. I do suspect that the coffee will be better in the Technovorm. My wife -- who gets up an hour and a half after me for work -- says it does a great job at keeping the coffee warm. I'm giving it 4 stars because of my observed design issues -- and yes, because my expectations have been so high for so many years. Flavor is 5 stars. Stay tuned....

I waited for this unit to go on sale and got it during Prime Days. Saved over 130. This unit makes great coffee quickly. No frills. It is basically like a sophisticated percolator but delivers consistent brewing every time. I fill the pot and dump into reservoir. Put my freshly ground coffee into the filter and in 5 minutes I have a high quality pot of coffee. Some have complained about the drip but I have not seen any inconsistency. I used to have a single serve unit which was more time consuming every time I wanted to brew a cup. This unit is perfect for people who just want coffee! I would wait for a sale as I didn’t want to pay over 300. It’s so simple to use a Caveman can do it. 😁

This is my go-to coffee maker each morning. When I don't feel like doing a pour over or siphon, I reach for this machine instead. It's easy to use and easy to clean. The heating plate is great when making larger pots that I plan to drink later, keeping the coffee at a good temperature without burning it. It uses standard #4 filters, so no need to hunt down specialty filters. The half/full carafe switch is a nice touch, letting me brew a smaller batch without sacrificing quality when I don't need a full pot. Build quality and design are also solid, it feels sturdy and looks great on the counter.

Our grind and brew machine died on us and so we started using a French press and/or Areo press. Both options worked fine, but I like to make a pot in the morning so my wife can have a cup, and I can take the rest to work in a thermos. I started watching reviews on drip coffee makers and came across this unit. Everything about it was appealing. -THE LOOK- Aesthetically, it's stunning. Timeless, classic look. It's very clean, the textured finish looks very durable, doesn't finger print, and the color choices are excellent. (I wanted the pistachio color but once I pulled the trigger couldn't wait for it to be shipped so opted for my second choice). While brewing it looks neat as the water bubbles up the center column and into the outlet. -THE BREWING OPTIONS- Very basic controls, but the half pot select allows you to not only brew a half pot, but modifies blooming duration. From there the sky is the limit with grind options and strength without all the buttons and programming. It's also pretty fast- full pot in 6 minutes. -THE TASTE- I've had it 5 days and have made 7-8 pots... It's the best tasting coffee (obviously the beans, grind and everything can make the difference... but when I have a Tim Hortons or Starbucks it's just not the same) and I drink black coffee. -THE DESIGN- If it ain't broke... this design has been around for 50 years and is hand made in the Netherlands and comes with a 5 year warranty. It's not ground breaking but that's the point. Keep it simple. Quality parts, copper heating element, and separate elements for water heating and the carafe. The removable water outlet arm is a nice touch if it gets a fingerprint on it or if your need to clean- simply pop off. -THE PRICE- Ok, so this is super expensive for "just a coffee brewer" but personally I'd rather spend big money on a quality piece that has service able parts, rather than a machine 1/3 the price that may only last 2-4 years. This is a lifetime machine if cared for. Personally I drink at least 3 large black coffees/ day. Starbucks dark roast black is $4.00 CAD. It'll pay for itself in no time. -THE ONLY NEGATIVE- The glass carafe seems really fragile and thin. I'm paranoid it will break. I do not allow anyone to operate my machine as I'm scared they wouldn't be as careful as I when I rinse it. So if you buy pre ground coffee and want an easy pot of coffee, or like to grind fresh and experiment in grams per liter, ground size etc... but must have the best- buy this.

Makes delicious coffee and looks very sleek in my kitchen. Happy with this purchase and would recommend it.

Me parece un poco cara. Está fabricada principalmente de piezas plásticas. La jarra receptora es de un cristal muy delgado y se siente frágil. Las primeras 2 o 3 veces que la usé me decepcionó por la escasa extraccion que producía un café insípido, pero empecé a jugar con el tamaño de la molienda y cantidades de manera diferente a la que usaba en otras cafeteras de goteo y entonces sucedió la magia, el café resultante es realmente delicioso. Yo uso el sistema de media jarra y esta se filtra en menos de 4 minutos. También me di cuenta que seguramente el secreto está en que la cafetera logra calentar el agua a una temperatura más adecuada a diferencia de otras cafeteras más baratas. Sin embargo también observo que el contacto del agua caliente con el café molido no es parejo, ya que el café que queda más alejada del chorro caliente no es tocada por el agua, de tal manera que siempre al inicio de la filtración muevo el café con una cuchara. Mi unica duda es, al ser tan rápida la filtración, no se estará desperdiciando una gran cantidad de café? Y una más, la caja dice Made in China y eso me preocupó, pero en la base de la máquina se confirma que es europea.

El producto venía dañado! es una pena que después de ver tantas opiniones de este excelente producto venga de esta manera. me dí la oportunidad de hacer un gasto tan grande y me llevo una gran desepcion.
