I bought them for my wife. She has said they are good for getting your mind greased. They work best to help get you past a block. In her opinion they would help.

If that's not working, try another card! Even if you react negatively to a card, that reaction may be just the push you needed to go in a different useful direction.

Are the cards and ideas appropriate for a kid? More specifically a 13-year-old.

That depends on the child. If I were the parent, I would go through the cards and find the ones that seemed most appropriate to the maturity and creativity of that particular child.
