Are the characters magnetic or just the attire? Would they stick to a metal surfice on their own or do they have to be used in the stands?

Pretty sure that only the outfits are magnetic. (I’m not by the set now). “Dolls” are best in stand, but can also be played with flat like a paper doll. This is a great set! My grands love it and can share and play together

Would this be good to take on an airplane?

Not sure if it would be a good idea to take this on a plane. It is very cute but has lots of pieces that could fall on the floor and that might not be much fun!
