Would a 5 year old enjoy using it? Would a lower magnification level (e.g., 30x to 60x) be better for a 5 year old?

For a 5 yo I would go with a lower power. Young kids like a "big picture" view vs a small magnified view. This will only magnify a very small area and you have to move it around. I use it to examine a knife edge polish when using Japanese water stones for sharpening my Japanese kitchen knives. 10-20x would probably be better for you. Hope this helps.

Does this work with slides?

I believe it could work fine with slides by simply placing the base on one end of the slide, but it doesn't have a mount specifically designed to hold slides such as more expensive units do. On the other hand you can put this in your pocket and enjoy it anywhere while your expensive one is sitting at home on the bench!

Hurts the eye. Hard to see.

I am so frustrated.1. It hurts the eye so much. The light coming out of it gives you a headache after a few minutes.2. It is very hard to adjust the lens focus to see.3. It shows the objects upside down. (The ‘?’ is ‘¿’ for instance).For me, it is a total rip-off.
