Does this 12 GB system play ps2 games?

This model does NOT let you use PS2 discs. ONLY the FIRST RUN of the ORIGINAL PS3 model (“FAT” 20GB & 60GBs, with doors that opens on the left side, to reveal a number of slots for different memory cards) will run a certain array of PS2 physical discs, for which there’s a PS2 Compatibility Chart, online (https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/PS2_Classics_Emulator_Compatibility_List).

ONLY that initial run of PS3s, which have partial PS2s built-in, will run those games, though. After the first run, at $500 and $600 (the PS3 WAS NOT “introduced at $600,” as most people think — and which is the number that gets thrown around — but rather, they put out two models, starting at $500. Sony removed that compatibility, to bring the price down to $400, after that first round of original, FAT model machines (of which I bought one, from Best Buy, in December, 2006) are PS2 compatible, at all, and, if you’re really looking for one of those, then you should MAKE CERTAIN that the it is a first run, with the door that hides memory card slots (effectively a memory card reader, like you can get, with USB adapters). There’s also a certain serial number that those models have, which you can look up, on Google, to be sure, for sure.

Those models cost a ton more — as compared to all other runs of all other models, except possibly the red Super Slim God of War III Special Edition models — given their rarity. Hope this helps!

Is it possible to use the hard drive from my first gen 80 gb ps3 in this one?  Or have they changed the size?

The super slim hard drive has to be 2.5 inch sata and 5400rpm. So if your hard drive reaches those requirements it should work.

Do you need more than 12gb to play about 5-6 games? I really can't afford the 500gb version.

I never had more then 5 and never had a problem. It also depends on the size of the games you play.
