No.8 VRI Oak Handle Lock Knife - Brown

Awesome little knife, perfect for chopping vegetables while I'm camping.

First Opinel, well made & v.light to have in the pocket. Holds an edge. Like the lock feature. Previously associated quality with heft, not in this case. Good buy.

With delivery I paid £25, March 2026. The knife came razor sharp out of the box. The Oak handle and Stainless steel blade seems like the obvious choice. I bought this as an addition to my Stanley Lunch Box Mobile Kitchen. Folded into the handle it's 110mm or 4 inches and 1 centimeter in length and fits into the Mobile Kitchen perfectly. Open and locked the blade is 83 mm or 3 and a 1/4 inches, overall length open is 7.5 inches or 190mm. I bought it for food preparation, the flat grind is perfect for this. It's also a reasonable camp knife and if used with care I expect it will last a lifetime.

This is my third Opinel No 8 and I have found them to be a simple, robust, well made and durable knife. I have not given 5* as on this occasion I opted for the Oak handle which looked attractive in photographs but in reality, on the example I received, is probably not as good as the standard Beech handle on my previous knives. Opening/closing and locking actions are also currently very stiff but may ease with time and use. Edge as provided is good but this blade is stainless steel and my personal experience has been that the carbon steel blades will take and keep a better edge, but there is the obvious downside. This is a good size for a "working" pocket knife but technically this knife may be illegal if carried casually in the pocket without a justified, work related purpose/reason.

It's Opinel, they're always good!!! Can shave with them out of the box and they're easy to keep sharp. That's why I've had one in my pocket for 40 years!!!

Opinel. What can i say except excellent for food slicing when on camping trips

Nicht zu vergleichen mit einem Schweizer Taschenmesser, jedoch für viele tägliche Anwendungen zu gebrauchen. Eine Klinge in Chromstahl wäre zwar pflegeleichter, ist jedoch nicht so scharf zu schleifen. Sollte es mal verloren gehen, hält sich der Verlust in Grenzen.

まだ購入した直後の感想ですが ノーマルのブナ材と比較にならない位木肌が荒く味があります。 木肌の色味は若干濃く、年輪？導管？がハッキリした茶色でコントラストが美しいです。 ただ木肌の荒さは好き嫌いが分かれるかも知れません。 ノーマルのブナ材にある虎斑模様は有りませんでした。 ちなみに柄にはOPINELの印字もありません。 とりあえず柄はサンドペーパーで塗装？を剥がし蜜蝋ワックスを塗り込み 刃はサンドペーパー、コンパウンドで磨き縦縞を消し艶々にしてみました 使い込んだ時の経年変化に期待しています。 オピネルはグリップエンドが切りっぱなしで荒れていて、雑感がありますが ここをサンドペーパーで磨き適当なオイルを塗るだけでも見栄えが一気に良くなる感じです。
