Das idyllisch und verborgen in den Bergen Nord-Argentiniens gelegene katholische Knaben-Internat hat 1962 seine besten Zeiten lang hinter sich. Früher wurden dort mehr als 250 Heranwachsende von fünfundzwanzig Patres unterrichtet, heute kümmern sich gerade mal vier Mönche mehr schlecht als recht um ein gutes Dutzend wilde, pubertierende Jungs. Unangekündigt kommt plötzlich der undurchsichtige Pater Martin an die Schule, und bald fällt auf, dass er besonders Kontakt zu dem attraktiven Außenseiter Franz sucht. Der Junge leidet noch immer darunter, dass Pater Lucio, zu dem er sich besonders hingezogen fühlte, wegen sexueller Verfehlungen von der Schule abberufen wurde. Nach und nach wird deutlich, dass Pater Martins besonderes Interesse an Franz aber nicht etwa sexueller Natur ist, sondern sich darauf stützt, dass beide gemeinsame Wurzeln in Nazi-Deutschland haben. He doesn't play with the other boys anywhere near as much as they play with themselves and each other as they run riot around the priests supposed to be in charge. Instead he sits on his own and looks after the horses - with little knowledge of who he is or where he came from. One day, a stranger literally strolls into sight and sets about befriending the boy and telling him all about his family history. From that point onwards a deeper, darker plot evolves, leading to a shocking climactic finish that gives this movie the much higher rating than its frivolous opening would suggest.

Great film
Somewhat controversial as the film goes but the simple cinematography and back setting is beautiful. It’s a shame this is Noels last film. He had a way of catching such beauty in every shot

A beautiful but disturbing film with an unexpected twist at the end
Excellent direction and cinematography, with a totally natural and un-selfconscious cast of boy actors. Ivan Noel's last film before he committed suicide. The 'behind the scenes' video blogs included as extras alone make the purchase of the DVD worthwhile.

I got rid of this disc when I realised it was probably illegal in the UK.

Interesting foreign movie
An interesting foreign movie, with English subtitles. It is an odd tail with quite a big twist at the end. You have to be prepared to watch it through to the end to understand what is going on. Unusual to say the least.

Really Love The DVD. Brilliant To Watch.

No Spoilers here! This was Iván Noel's last film, in which he also took a lead role. Here he makes the use, as usual, of locally sourced kids; and one brought in for the lead kid role. By returning to creating a story with a central figure, there is a stronger plot than in some of the previous films. Whether or not this makes it his best, is of course a matter of personal opinion. So sad that this was to be his last before his untimely passing.
