what is the difference between size "normal" and "a". If diff diameters could you give me the sizes. Thanks

dont know.  Normal is 4 inches diameter.  Size is only important if mounting new alarm on an existing back plate - they obviously need to fit.  There is a 5 inch model I believe.  Worst case scenario if exg back plate won't fit is remove exg backplate and fit the one that comes with the new alarm.
