Pinkerton

A classic Weezer album. Last one with Matt Sharp on bass. The vinyl version sounds great.

My all time favorite Weezer album, hands down! So happy it's affordable here on again because the record store wants double. No thanks. This album is a must have for new and old Weezer fans alike.

I listened to 'Pinkerton' as a first look into this band, and I picked this particular album simply because it had the prettiest cover out of the whole, though then I made some research to look if it was really worth a listen. To my surprise, it seemed to be the band's most critically aclaimed album, so, woo. Oh boy, did I hate it. I let the songs play in order, listened to it whole, and the only redeeming thing about were both the opening and closing tunes. I won't bother going on about what clicked about 'Tired of Sex' and 'Butterfly'; the point is that 80% of the album felt monotonous, aimless and downright horrendous. Whether it was its lyrical immaturity, its amateurish composition or something else, I couldn't tell what I hated more about it. I simply couldn't believe people listened to this unironically. It was so bad, I was deeply annoyed, as there was some expectation in me after all. In fact, I was so annoyed, I listened to the whole album more than once just for the sake of complaining. You know how you sometimes disapprove of things you haven't really tried so far? Well, I know I do, but since I disliked 'Pinkerton' so damn much, I decided to be a fair person, and got around getting a whole bad review ready for it in case it was brought up in some situation. So I'm listening once again, and I'm noticing some things. For instance, I noticed I like 'No other one' a little bit. I also notice 'El Scorcho' has a quirky little tone that I seem to dig. Okay. I listen again and again. I'm noticing 'Getcho' has a really cool chorus. I notice 'Why bother?'s last chorus has a really neat vocal play in it. I then notice I am getting used to the songs. I begin to remember their names, their structure, their order, even. I grow very familiar with the album. I then notice I am helplessly in love with it. 'Pinkerton' is so criminally easy to hate that there is little reason to give it more than one first listen. Proof of this is its history if criticism; not just here and there, EVERYONE hated it when it first came out, and years had to pass before the same poeople suddenly fell for it. But since then, there are people out there to tell you to, for the love of Christ, give it a second (and maybe a third) chance, because you owe it to yourself; 'Pinkerton' is one of the masterpieces the gloomy 90's spawned, and their sweetest, crunchiest, loveliest, punkiest and rawest rock album since 'Nevermind'. Every song in it is as important and irreplaceable as the last one, and with time, you will sing to each and every one of them with all the joy of your heart.

No scratchs and plays perfectly! I would totally recommend buying!

This is their best album and the deluxe edition I believe was the last Weezer CD I bought. I just couldn't get into their newer stuff. I tried. This album (along with The Blue Album) is pure magic.

As a follow-up to the hugely successful Weezer debut album, Rivers Cuomo wrote an album teeming with youthful angst. To support that, the music is generously laced with grunge, riding the prevailing trend at the time (1996), with dark guitar sounds including dissonance and feedback. The music could almost be Stone Temple Pilots. But I doubt Scott Weiland would say "uh-huh" in the boyish way Rivers does throughout "Getchoo". It's cute, and WTH, I like it. Most of the lyrics are concerned with issues Scott probably left behind before STP was born. In "Why Bother", we hear this: "You've got a look that makes me think you're cool/But it's just sexual attraction/Not something real so I'd rather keep w#ckin'...Maybe you could break my heart next summer." In "Across The Sea", a letter from a fan in Japan provokes this response: "Why are you so far away from me?/I need help and you're way across the sea/I could never touch you/I think it would be wrong." In "El Scorcho", the boy says this to a girl he is longing for: "Won't you gimme a minute/Just come up to me/And say hello to my heart/How stupid is it? For all I know you want me too." And in "Pink Triangle", the poor dude discovers that the girl he likes is a lesbian: "Then she put me in my place/If everyone's a little queer/Can't she be a little straight?" Three tracks stand out as very different from the others. "El Scorcho" has deadly guitar licks that remind me of some Doors song, maybe "Love Me Two Times" or "Moonlight Drive" or a hybrid of the two. In "Falling For You", we are clearly hearing from an older dude (Rivers?) infatuated with a younger girl: "There's rules about old goats like me/Hanging around with chicks like you...You say 'like' too much." The final track, "Butterfly" is soft, acoustic and rather mournful. I'm not sure, but it seems to be about a young guy regretting a sexual encounter, and the butterfly is a metaphor for the girl he "harmed": "Yesterday I went outside...Caught a lovely Butterfly/When I woke up today...She had withered all away...I'm sorry for what I did/I did what my body told me to/I didn't mean to do you harm...I told you I would return...But I ain't never coming back..."

Pinkerton brims with catchy pop hooks and melodies, yet manages to go beneath the surface of the band's power pop façade and expose all the feelings and desires of a self-isolated nerd/rockstar. The album was originally panned by critics upon its release in 1996, but has now gone on to develop a cult following and has also gained the respect of critics and fans alike in retrospect. A good portion of the album was written while Cuomo was attending Harvard, while dually recovering from leg surgery, and in the process, he became a self-isolated hermit. (This is most evident on the track, "The Good Life", where Rivers sings "Can't even get around/without an old-man cane" and "Shivering in the cold/Bitter and alone") Other concerns Cuomo voices concern relationships of all kinds, from falling in love with a lesbian ("Pink Triangle"), receiving letters from a woman living in Japan whom he becomes infatuated with ("Across the Sea") and even a tune about a drug-addled liar of a girlfriend. Cuomo knows he's a geeky guy, and his lyrics are quirky and self-depreciating instead of pompous and arrogant. Throughout the course of Pinkerton, there are many examples of his writing style, and if I had to choose two songs from here to illustrate them, I'd choose the aforementioned "The Good Life" along with "Pink Triangle". The result is a plethora of fun songs, no matter how depressed or angsty Cuomo gets. Personally, I love this album. Even though it is still pretty radio friendly and poppy, it somehow manages to be brutally honest and hard to forget. It does require more than one listen to fully appreciate, and if you're new to Weezer and expecting another Blue album from this, you'll be disappointed. Underneath it all is a great album waiting to be discovered.

何度聞いたかわからないほど、繰り返し聞いたアルバムです。 1stも好きなのですが、聞いていて感情が揺さぶられるという点ではピンカートンが勝っています。 グランジっぽいノイジーなサウンドと、お腹の中から絞りだしたようなリヴァースの声も含めて、このアルバムからは自分の心のなかに淀んでいる不安や苛立ち、疑問などが噴出したかような熱を感じます。その熱が、ウィーザー節と言ったらいいのでしょうか、どこまでも切ないメロディラインと融合しています。 歌詞を読むとわかりますが、このアルバムの歌詞は、情けない心の叫びのオンパレードです。歌詞カードを眺めながらピンカートンを聞いていると、どんなに求めても得られない恋を求めて、「なんで？」「どうして？」って嘆いたり、ちょっと落ち込んだり、元気を少し取り戻して笑ってみたり、逆ギレしてみたり、顔じゅう鼻水だらけにしながら泣いてみたりするリヴァースの顔が見えてくるような気がします。 重苦しい空気でTired Of Sexが始まり、段々盛り上がって一気に轟音の世界に引き込まれて、聞いているうちにどんどん感情移入してしまい、アルバムの一番の盛り上がりどころであるPink TriangleからFalling For Youのあたりでは、泣きそうになってしまいます。 泣き虫ロックという言葉は、まさにこのアルバムのことを指すためにある言葉でしょう。傑作です。

Llegó prácticamente nuevo el disco, impecable el estado y sobre todo la entrega fue rápida, recomendable 10/10 además de que Pinkerton es el álbum más GOAT de Weezer

He comprado este disco aprovechando la pasada oferta de 3x15€ en CD's de Amazon... lo pedí el 17 de Diciembre y ha llegado el 19 por la mañana cuando el tiempo estimado era el día 20 por la tarde. Este disco como los restantes han llegado en perfectas condiciones de calidad y tiempo. Me ha sorprendido gratamente. Soy una de las que no se atrevía a comprar por internet y menos ofertas casi de risa y mira por donde me ha salido genial. Estoy deseando que haya nuevas ofertas y comprar más CD's!!!! Cumple con la descripción. Se me olvidaba, al ser Autorip he podido escuchar las canciones en cuanto lo compré. Me encanta ese sistema!! Pd. (Este mensaje lo copiaré a los dos discos restantes que compré, debido a que me llevé la misma grata sorpresa (ya que vinieron juntos)(Weezer, Weezer Pinkerton y Sum41 Underclass Hero)

Le temps a eu raison de mon album, et cet album manquait à ma collection depuis qu'il avait rendu l'âme. J'ai donc commandé ce deuxième album de Weezer en voyant les prix bas proposés par différents vendeurs. Album bien emballé, que j'ai reçu en quelques jours seulement sans casse. L'album est bien neuf puisque sous blister. Et je suis enfin ravi de pouvoir réécouter les morceaux qui ont accompagné une partie de ma jeunesse, et de pouvoir les faire (re) découvrir à mes proches! Dès la première écoute, les mélodies restent en tête telles des berceuses pop-punk-rock, et les mélodies nous emportent sans difficulté dans l'univers de Weezer! Deuxième album du groupe qui avait la lourde tâche de trouver un successeur au très bon Blue Album, ce Pinkerton est parsemé de tubes entêtants, tels que Butterfly, très douce et sensible par exemple qui clôture à merveille l'album, tout en "s'opposant" au titre d'ouverture "Tired of Sex" très punk et axé sur l'autodérision. Un excellent album, qui demeure pour moi le meilleur de la grande discographie du groupe mythique...
