Does the adapter hose need to be purchased for general use?

No, you can use the small propane tanks which will be good for several cook outs, approx. 3 hours on low flame. We are in an RV so I use the small tanks for one or two nights stops and when camping for a week I use the 20# propane bottle with the adapter to do cooking. Cost about $25.00, but handy to have. Hope this information is useful for you.

How long do the small canisters last?

I grill a couple of times a week and I am on my second canister since May 1st of this year. Probably one a month if you only grill a couple pieces of chicken or steaks each time. More if you are cooking something big. Consider buying an adapter and a larger tank if you are doing more.

Can I use this on the tailgate of my truck or does it burn too hot and will melt the plastic cover on the tailgate?

The grill is designed for table top use and should be fine for your tail gate. If you are worried, put a couple of large tiles or some other fire resistant material under the grill. I would be more worried about placing hot utensils or pans on the gate.
