What is the secret to not letting the air escape before inserting the plug?

I had the same problem and realized that if I over inflated the ball and then had the plug immediately available to insert, the amount of air that escaped upon inserting the plug was not a lot. It takes a couple of attempts, at least for me, but I got the ball to just the right amount of inflation for my exercising. Hope this helps.

there seems to be quite a few complaints about inflating the ball. Can I use a hand pump to inflate it? Would that work better?

Yes a pump would probably make it firmer. We don’t have one, we just inflated it with the straw. That works alright for my leg exercises.

I have been using this Pilates Ball for several months at slightly less than fully inflated. It measures eight inches. My physical therapist has instructed me to use it this way due to the knee exercises prescribed which require a little "give" to the ball. If it were fully inflated it would be nine inches. I'm pleased with this product and it works well for me.

I see that reviews say that it ruins other finishes that it comes into contact with. Is there something that can be used to clean it to prevent this?

We have changed our formulation to be less aggressive on finished wood, so it will be less of an issue going forward. Like all balls like this, it is a good idea to still be mindful of not placing yoga balls or exercise balls made of PVC on wood products. There isn't a soap solution to remove the softening agent as it is what makes the PVC soft, which also can interact with varnishes and paints.
