Deep South: New Southern Cooking

This is a phenomenal cookbook. I have bought it now three times, twice to give away to friends who are also avid cooks.In addition to very considered and unique recipes of the South, many of which you probably have never encountered, the text and photos of McDonald’s work build a true, candid artistic story of the culinary Deep South. It’s a handsomely put together tome and well well worth the investment for anyone who takes pleasure in cookbooks that also seek to portray the region or style they cover.One caveat: don’t pick this book if you’re just looking for an encyclopedic recitation of typical southern dishes. It’s not trying to be that... think of it more as a vast representative tasting menu of a critical culinary region in the United States.

Sadly, despite high hopes, I've been quite disappointed with this book. Whilst it does a good job of explaining the culture of Southern US food, the recipes don't translate too well for the home kitchen environment. For example, when in reality am I ever going to cook a whole pig on a fire in the UK? Are Chitlins that easy for me to source and cook for my family? Probably not. This is such a shame because after going to New Orleans for my honeymoon, I was desperate for a book that would allow me to easily recreate the stunning food I ate there. I'm not sure this book really does that. That said however, the Coffee Rub Short Ribs are probably worth the price of the book alone, even if I did just BBQ them rather than smoke them.

Never been but it makes you want to visit.
