CHECK THE INGREDIENTS! It matters, ALOT, and this brand has them and in the right amounts!
Hubby was diagnosed with hereditary, wet & dry age-related macular degeneration a few yrs ago and was told to take an eye vitamin called Areds2, not the Areds, it had to be Areds2. I started out buying him PreserVersion Areds2 one of the companies that makes so many different formulas of Areds2. After he'd been on them for awhile, he told me he didn't think they were helping as much as they had at first. I had noticed that the price of the Areds2 pills could vary, sometimes by quite a bit. But, they were all labeled Areds2, and that's what he was told by the eye doc to take. Sometime later, when I was at the medical clinic, waiting for an appt, I happened to find a senior magazine with an article on AMD and the efficacy of Areds2 eye vitamins. Since then, and in addition to that, I have watched numerous videos, trudged my way through too many medical publications, and spoken to the opthamologist my mother sees. We've learned alot about why there is a difference in price, the truth about the efficacy of these Areds2 pills, and the likely reason hubby came to feel that they weren't working as well as they had before. HERE IS WHAT WE'VE LEARNED (IMPORTANT!) ^^First of all, we were told right away that there is no cure for Age Related Macular Degeneration, that WET AMD is worse than DRY, with worse prognosis. Treatment is not a cure, it is aimed at slowing progression of the disease and preserving vision for as long as possible. ^^While this combination of vitamins, herbs and minerals has had positive results in slowing progression of AMD, the doctors referenced made a point of warning that THESE PILLS SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN BY ANYONE WHO DOES NOT HAVE AMD and who has not been directed to take them by an opthamologist. Reason #1 - The pills have shown NO effectiveness as a PREVENTATIVE against getting AMD. In addition, the possible adverse health effects of taking this combination of vitamins , herbs and minerals beyond 10 years, has NOT been studied and is NOT known. MORE IMPORTANT INFORMATION: **A hugely important fact we learned but weren't told by hubby's initial prescribing doctor: If you're taking Areds2 as part of treatment for Age Related Macular Degeneration, and the pills do not contain THE INGREDIENTS LISTED BELOW in THE AMOUNTS LISTED BELOW you are wasting your money! This is the formula that's had positive results. ^^Of those doctors who addressed reasons that some companies make many different formulas of Areds2, all believed it was profit-driven. If the company uses less ingredients or lesser amounts of an ingredient, it costs less to make the pills. If they label it "Areds2", the uninformed public will pay the cost and likely never realize they didn't get the right pills. ^^This "VITEYES" brand has the EXACT ingredients in the EXACT amounts required, and at the LOWEST price I was able to find. I'm back for the fourth bottle of this brand, and DONE with PreserVision! ^^Instructions on the bottle state 2 pills per day, meaning that, together, two pills contain the amount of ingredients listed on the bottle as the daily dosage. ALWAYS READ THE BOTTLE FOR DOSAGE INSTRUCTIONS, never assume the dosage will be the same as it was for the last bottle. ^^And finally, I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL! ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING A MEDICATION OR CHANGING THE DOSAGE OF A MEDICATION. I AM NOT ADVISING ANYONE TO TAKE THIS MEDICATION, I AM SHARING WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED IN HOPE THAT IT MAY BE HELPFUL TO SOMEONE ELSE WHEN SPEAKING TO THEIR OWN DOCTOR, AND SAVING THEM TIME I'VE ALREADY SPENT RESEARCHING THIS DRUG. MY HUSBAND WAS INSTRUCTED BY AN OPTHAMOLOGIST TO TAKE THIS MEDICATION AS PART OF HIS TREATMENT PLAN TO SLOW PROGRESSION OF AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION. HE REMAINS UNDER THE CARE OF AN OPTHAMOLOGIST. ^^The last two of ingredients listed are not commonly seen but are vitally important for efficacy, and ALL of the Vitamins, Herbs and Minerals that are listed must be taken in the quantities shown. ^^INGREDIENTS, DAILY DOSAGES, and AMOUNTS CONTAINED IN "Viteyes Areds2" pills: Vitamin C - 500 mg per day Vitamin E - 182 mg per day (or 400 IU per day) Zinc - 25 mg per day Copper - 1.2 mg per day (that says 1 point 2 mg; it's hard to see the period) LUTEIN - 10 mg per day (This ingredient is vital for treatment of AMD) ZEAXANTHIN - 2 mg per day (This ingredient must be included in order for the Lutein to work) ( Beta-carotene was an ingredient in the original AREDS formula but has been removed from Areds2 due to instances of lung cancer in smokers. It is NOT recommended that current or former smokers take the original Areds formula containing beta-carotene.) My husband also takes three B Vitamin supplements along with the Areds2, as instructed by his doctor B-6: 1.3 to 1.7 mg per day B-12: 2.4 mcg per day - Ask your doctor, B12 is sometime prescribed in higher doses since the body doesn't easily absorb it (Note the B-12 is dosed here in mcg units, not mg) B-9 (FOLIC ACID): 400 mcg per day (Note the Folic Acid is dosed here in mcg units, not mg)

Good eye vitamins
These are a vitamin that my optometrist recommended. Not this brand but these have the same ingredients and a better price. I get them on subscription which I don't usually do with any products but I want to be sure I'll have them coming every couple months. They're not teeny but not too large at least for me, to take easily each day.

Lower zinc content is working
First AREDS 2 brand I tried caused nausea. Research indicated the high zinc content might be the problem, so I bought this lower zinc brand. So far, no problems. As for whether it's actually saving my vision, only my ophthalmologist can say, but she's the one who said I should start taking it.

Best combination
Studies have shown this is the combination that works to keep your eyes healthy (prevent AMD) and has less zinc than the 1st combination. Recommended by my Optometrist. Best way to take is 1 in AM and 1 in PM.

Easy on the stomach
I'm giving 5 stars even if only 4 light up. I'm no scientist, I can't be sure these are the best AREDS2, but I recently switched from taking VitEyes to Bausch & Lombe Preservision and they made me so very sick to my stomach that I threw away the capsules and went back to VitEyes. I've read the cause of the stomach distress is Bausch and Lombe places 80 mg of Zinc in the 2-capsule-dose instead of the usual 25 mg. I had a severe stomach ache and vomiting from Bausch & Lombe. I had switched bec Bausch & Lombe can be obtained right from my grocery store rather than by mail but I will stick with VitEyes for the foreseeable future.
