Has anyone had these exposed to saltwater environments for extended period? I am curious how they will hold up, since they aren't stainless.

They are on the outside wall of my camper trailer. Full exposure to the elements, but rare trips to salt water environments. On trailer for 5 years. Used stainless screws to mount. No rust noticed yet.

I want to use for custom shades for my skylights, can these be easily applied without the special tool?

Yes they can be easily applied without a special tool. Male piece goes through the fabric. The female piece lays inside of the four tips of the male piece on other side of fabric. All you do then is bend the tabs of the male piece over the femal piece to hold in place. Hope this helps
