Are there metal or plastic stays on the upper back? Thank you

They are neither metal nor plastic. They are made of medical glass fiberboard. Medical glass fiber is a kind of clean and environment-friendly material. It is the most comfortable and suitable for human body medical devices（back brace）.

The sizing is given in the product description of the item. Size Large is 35.4 to 41.3 waist. I ordered the XL, my waist is 43 inches. Fits fine.

My son is very thin and the way the straps adjust and adhere with velcro allow for a very good fit. I think this system would work well for all body types and their sizing system is accurate.

Does this brace have waist straps?

Back brace can help you provide lumbar support. It also prevents sagging of your shoulders.
