The California Kid

It's a good movie

Cool short story. Excellent musical score in the background. Had a Thomas Crown affair vibe. This was excellent. The cars were great if you’re a real car, real driver, no CGI collector. This should definitely be in your collection.

DVD – The California Kid (1974 TV Movie) The Western landscapes used as scenery and the early 70s style reminded me a lot of another made-for-TV movie, Steven Spielberg’s “Duel”. While not as good as that mini-masterpiece, “The California Kid” has a lot to offer. The plot is simple but classic. An over-the-top Sherriff, played by Vic Morrow, has a bad habit of chasing drivers and forcing them off the road to their deaths. The film opens with an out of town victim being subject to the sheriff’s wrath; prompting his brother (Charlie Sheen) to come to the town to investigate. Charlie arrives in a hot rod with a paint job that screams attitude. The confrontation begins. Being a TV movie, the pacing is fast but it allows for character development. As well as Vic Morrow and Charlie Sheen’s characters, you get to know a little about those played by Nick Nolte and Michelle Phillips. The car chases are thrilling with the Western scenery providing the perfect backdrop. Actors of the caliber of Morrow, Nolte and Sheen are not going to disappoint and they don’t here. Since Vic Morrow passed in 1982, this is a wonderful opportunity to see him on the screen. He was a very distinctive villain. A very watchable film and great value at around $6.

Really good early Martin Sheen film.

This movie is a sentimental favorite for me. I saw it when it first came out and it struck chord with me. I think this was a major movie for Martin Sheen and I think he was perfectly casted. It seems to be TV movie quality as far as the production values go, but it was made before Lucas and Spielberg changed movies forever. I don't think either of them did us movie lovers a favor. I have no problem with the notion that it's just a movie and the blood is fake and no one really dies and story reins supreme. I had no problem with noticing that the The California Kid's lake pipes hooked to nothing. This was a story about a young guy who was righting an injustice no matter what the consequences to himself. The writers did not try to 'soup' up the ending and the last shot was perfect. (I don't want to ruin the ending for anyone who has not already watched the movie.) I will watch this movie again and again, right up there with Two-Lane Blacktop.

Weil er seine Frau und seine kleine Tochter durch einen unfallflüchtigen Raser verloren hat, wird der Sheriff einer amerikanischen Kleinstadt zum Mörder. Er betreibt dort mit einem Richter und einem getreuen zweiten Sheriff die Polizeistation. Immer wieder wartet er neben der Straße zur Staatsgrenze mit seinem stark getunten Dienstwagen auf Leute, die zu schnell an ihm in Richtung Grenze vorbeifahren. Sofort nimmt er deren Verfolgung auf. Wer nicht anhält und versucht ihm zu entkommen, den rammt er in einer sehr gefährlichen Kurve von der Fahrbahn. Am Beginn des Filmes wird sein rabiates Vorgehen eindeutig gezeigt. Zwei Matrosen, einer davon heißt McCord, kommen dabei ums Leben. Wegen der merkwürdig vielen schon in diesem Jahr in dieser Stadt bei Verkehrsunfällen getöteten Menschen schreibt eine Zeitung darüber und die Staatsanwaltschaft hat bereits den Richter dazu unangenehm befragt. In dieser Situation kommt Michael McCord mit seinem stark zurechtgemachten Hot Rod Boliden namens "The California Kid" in die Stadt gefahren, um herauszufinden, wie sein jüngerer Bruder tatsächlich gestorben ist. Diese Geschichte wird bis zum bitteren Ende des Sheriffs handwerklich solide und packend mit besten Darstellern und einiger Raffinesse erzählt. Weder an der Bild- noch an der Tonqualität der DVD gibt es etwas zu beanstanden. Ich halte den Film auch deswegen für sehr sehenswert, weil bei ihm die Balance zwischen den beiden Schwerpunkten Automobil und Mensch durchaus geglückt ist. Dazu zeigt der Film eine vornehme Zurückhaltung bei drastischen Szenen, was ihn wohltuend von einigem abhebt, was heutzutage schon um die Mittagszeit im TV üblich ist. Ich bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Kauf dieser DVD, sie entspricht genau dem, was ich mir nach dem Sehen des Filmes gegen Ende der 1970er Jahre aus der Erinnerung heraus davon versprochen hatte.

This is good film with a good story but probably you are thinking about buying the film simply to see and hear the car. Well the car features prominently in the film and sounds great. However, with blu-ray providing improved sound as well as picture quality everything would sound even better if this film was released on blu-ray.
