Julia’s involvement in the play ends up being the best thing that can happen to her
Thank you to one of our 5th grade kiddos for recommending Short for our after school book club! Julia has always been short and is self conscious about her height. When summer comes, her mom makes her audition for a part in the local university’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Of course she is cast as a munchkin, along with her little brother. Julia’s involvement in the play ends up being the best thing that can happen to her. It helps her get over the loss of her dog, Ramon; she develops a relationship with her neighbor, Mrs. Chan; she befriends Olive, an adult in the play and fellow munchkin, and she changes how she feels about herself. Over the course of the summer, she not only grows on the outside, but also grows on the inside, which is where it matters most! This was such a sweet, enjoyable read! I loved Julia. She was comical, yet thoughtful at the same time. I loved seeing how her involvement with the play helped her to mature and come to terms with being herself! This is a great middle grade read!

Real and varied characters grapple with issues that matter
Really enjoyed and highly recommend Holly Goldberg Sloan's Short. Her identification of theater as a place where people can be whoever they are is wonderful (reminiscent of Tina Faye's summer theater experience from her memoir- the welcoming nature of both is palpable) - particularly appreciated in this era of rising intolerance and lack of support for the arts. Sometimes children's books that tackle issues fall into the trap of being pedantic; not so here. .As is the case with ALL of Goldberg Sloan's novels, I SO appreciate her writing - real and varied characters who think about and work through understanding things that matter..

Fabulous story
This is miraculous, not just for children. Thoughtful, inspiring, sensitive. I'll read this again. I'm a senior citizen child at heart.

I enjoyed this book
I enjoyed this book. It's probably more of an adolescent novel but it had a great message and was entertaining.

This book is truly wonderful and inspiring book. My mum bought it for me because I am very short for my age. I would recommend this book for the ages 8-12. My favourite character was Julia. This story taught me that it's not the outside that counts, it's the inside. I liked this book because it's inspiring and it has a good moral. Actors and actresses will enjoy this book. If you are not an actor or actress after reading this book you may try something new! ( Acting )!

This bok worth so much more praise than it gets! Its was so fascinating and real, I found myself unable to put it down. As you read, you feel the same way as Julia feels and you can picture each scene in your head. So child-friendly and perfect for fans of Dork Diaries. I truly believe we have an all-time classic here!
