Cetearyl Alcohol (Cetyl + Stearyl Alcohol) is a fatty alcohol that is an organic compound derived from coconut, palm, corn, soy or coconut palm trees and acts as a great emollient, emulsifier and amazing moisturizer. Fatty alcohols (aka high molecular alcohols) are a hybrid between alcohols and fatty oils and they are completely different to regular alcohols like ethanol (aka low molecular alcohols). There is often a misconception when the word alcohol is seen that it will dry out hair and skin, when the complete opposite is true. Fatty alcohols don’t have the same drying effect on hair and skin like more commonly known low molecular alcohols because of their structure. Because of their unique structure, fatty alcohols trap water and provides a soothing and moisturizing feel to the skin and hair.
