How does this table clip into the armrest of the sofa? It's really safe. Won't it fall down?

The legs are spring-loaded (I guess) and they snap open and shut. So when not in use, the legs snap up under the table. In use, they fit very snuggly around the armrest. Very stable, doesn't move, great product.

Can you put a regular-size plate on top? Maybe not the whole thing, but at least the bottom?

Probably nothing bigger than an 8 inch plate to have room for a cup or glass.

Is there any assembly required?

NO. The sofa couch arm tray don't need to assembly required. Thanks
