Q: what is the tickness that the slides can hold like a 4mm or 6mm?

It is 1/8 inch. I am sorry, I don't know about mm.

Q: Is there a cover for the top to protect the poster boards? And is there a plastic cover over the front of the board?

No cover on top or front down the sides

Q: what is the width of the slot? I need to be able slide a 1/2” thick wood panel into the slot where the poster typically goes.

I measured it and it would take probably no more than a 1/8 inch thick panel. So, 1/2" definitely would not fit. Hope this helps!!
