The top assembly just sits on top, it can be used with any other cup.

Yep! It’s flat on the bottom. I love this set…. It’s heavy but super easy to use.

does the filter cone attach to the mog or just sit on top?

It sits on top of it but there is a raised lip and lid so when you said it into the cup, it doesn’t slide off. You would have to actually bump it to knock it off. It stays on just fine. But don’t Saturday the angle… Leave it level and you will have no issues.

Are there any plastic components? More so are there any plastic element to come into contact with hot water?

The inner screen is held in place with a plastic bezel. This assembly screws in to the bottom of the brewer. It can be seen in the second photo (far right) It may come in contact as the water flows through, but it is suspended above the mug and unless you severely overfill it, it wont come in contact with the liquid in the mug. Also the lid of the mug is plastic. Both are advertised as BPA free
