Pairing archive photos of the 'Big Easy' with their modern counterparts, New Orleans Then and Now shows how the city has preserved its rich architectural heritage to become a must-see tourist destination . While New York has Dutch and English forebears, New Orleans has the French and Spanish to thank for creating a unique blend of eighteenth and nineteenth century architecture that has made it one of the most photographed cities in the world. Then there is the madness of Mardi Gras and the lure of its international jazz festival that has helped give it the nicknames; “the City that Care Forgot” and “the Big Easy.” Before the rise of the railroads it was the most prosperous city in the South. The city fell early in the Civil War, in 1862, but the dwindling importance of cotton and the Mississippi that led to the city’s real demise in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Today, tourism is an important industry and despite the inundation of floodwater from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, visitors have flocked back to the city. New Orleans Then and Now features the must-see sites of the French Quarter; Bourbon Street, once frequented by a streetcar named Desire, the Old Absinthe House, the Napoleon House, the haunted LaLaurie Mansion and the beautiful ironwork of the LaBranche buildings. It also shows the St.Louis Cathedral and the Higgins boatyard which played a crucial role in winning World War II. Review: Building a collection for a friend - All the Then and Now books are side by side pictures of a monument, a street, a building with the oldest pictures that one could fine and pictures now. The pictures are of a very good quality and make any comparison easy. A friend of mine has gotten to get a book of these for each city where I live and where she has visited me in the USA. It start making a fairly nice collection... We used to go buy it in bookstores but desertcart is also carrying it conveniently so on a few occasions, when we could not find the time to get to a bookstore that has it in stock, we used desertcart for this convenience. On top of it, the price is right... Review: Wonderful Pictorial History book of New Orleans - This is a Wonderful gift for anyone familiar with New Orleans or interested in its history versus today ! I gave this book to a close friend who was born in New Orleans and he told me how much he has enjoyed viewing and reading sections of it with both of his elderly parents who are fond of their early years spent in "The Big Easy."

Recommend for any tru NOLA lover
Love this book. Pictures are amazing. First perusal was too much fun. Now I'm reading all the details. So much history. I like that Katrina pictures were somewhat added, but that's not why I like the book. True depiction of then and now. I've seen some of the then (a few years after the picture). Quit a trip down memory lane. Recommend for any true NOLA lover.

Just buildings
Two page comparisons of old and new photos of mostly (except for a few after-Katrina shots) buildings in and near the French Quarter. The picture quality is good, and their size is almost whole page, with only a quarter or less of space dedicated to bottom page captions. Pages are plentiful too, if one considers that it's only buildings that are showed... The down factor is that these photos are more like still paintings than reminders of a living city: There are no people, either standing or working or doing anything (with a couple exceptions). No historical event can be recollected from these pages, only maybe mentioned as passing by in the few lines of text, but none from the pictures themselves. The price of the book is not unreasonable, and the editing is good, as well as the binding and paper quality, which all in all should not discourage New Orleans' lovers from enjoying it.

A Look Into The Past and Present
New Orleans Then and Now is a wonderful history in photographs for the Crescent City. I have visited New Orleans several times over the years and love the city more and more each time. This book offers a great insight to past places and their current look of today. Many show the changes of time while others remain the same as they were in the past, only more vivid and alive. There is also a few tribute pages to Hurricane Katrina and the damage that she caused with side by side photos of how these places were restored. One can instantly feel the history with each page and take hold of a sense of wonder to be at the very edge of time. This book is a must for any fans of Then & Now books.

The "Then and Now" books are a great series to read !!!
I have several of these "Then and Now" books of different cities. I have never been disappointed and have enjoyed them all! I have bought a couple of books at sales or auctions, and while the city may not be my first choice of interest, they are still very good books. I still read them and look at the photos even though I have 1) Either never been there or 2) Never really had an interest in the city. I have never been disappointed in this series of books and would highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys reading/looking at a book concerning the historical aspect of areas and buildings and what they looked like back then versus what it looks like now.

Buen libro pero maltratado
El libro está interesante pero estaba dañado. No lo devolví ya que no había muchos disponibles pero si le resta puntos.
