Question 1

We burn a stove on the lower level and need to plug an unused flue pipe on the level directly above. Can I have this in while the stove is in use.

Generally Yes, On modern built-to-code houses the flues to each device have to be a separate run up the chimney structure. That means your downstairs wood burner is a separate chimney from your upstairs. If your home is pre-1930 construction I would double check first to make sure your flues are separate. Pre-1930 there was no enforced building code, so anything is possible that far back.

Question 2

Does the 6" have enough flexibility to fit a 5" diameter flue ?

Accepted Answer

The pad is actually 7.5" in diameter. You can try it full size, but my guess is it will be a little tight in a 5" flue hole. But it is made to trim the edge to fit. If you use a sharp pair of scissors (or kitchen shears) trim one half inch off the edge. That will bring the wool pad  down to 6.5" diameter. That will be a perfect fit. If you are uncomfortable doing the trimming, just shoot us an email after you order and tell us how you want us to trim it for you.

Question 3

I’d like to purchase a 6 inch circular blocker, but the thin rod that opens and closes the damper is in the way. how would i install. could i slice it

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can slice it, or cut a small hole in it if you want to thread the rod through the cut.  Another option is to put the Flueblocker above the damper. The handle to the Flueblocker is detachable, so you tuck the pad past the open damper and then screw on the handle and pull the Flueblocker into place.

can it be used with gas only fireplace?

Accepted Answer

The official answer to that is "You cannot use the Flueblocker with a functioning vented gas log fireplace". The reason for that official answer is, by code functioning gas log fireplaces cannot have dampers of any kind, and existing metal dampers must be clipped open or removed. The reason for this code is so that people don't accidentally turn on their vented gas log when their flue is closed. Unfortunately, the byproduct of this code is the homeowner has an open portal to the outside 24/7, and the disadvantages to that are self evident (drafts, bugs, noise, bats, etc...)

What many of our customers do is, they disable their gas log  (by valve or by disconnect) from its fuel source and thus disable the gas log unit. This way they can close their flue. If you need any further advice for your application please feel free to call 608-467-0229.
