No, It probably should not be installed this way. Installing vertically above the p-trap is the best option.

Q: Does this item hook up to 1 1/2” pipe?

it does not fit a PVC or ABS 1 1/2" pipe you will need to get the 1 1/2" sink kit cut those and modify it that way.
