After 30 years, the Coach wallet I gave my husband is showing its age, with worn edging and some stitching unraveling. He’s too cheap to buy a replacement and just wanted me to get him something that will do the job, even if it won’t last nearly as long. You won’t mistake the leather here for the high-end stuff. Leather is graded, with the top end being called “full grain leather” and “top grain leather.” “Genuine leather,” which is how this wallet is described, is made from pieces of the less-dense layer of hides and it may be mixed with some percentage of synthetic material. It is then processed and stamped to give it a natural grain look. It may be glued onto paper or fabric as well (“bonded leather”), as appears to be the case with this wallet, because of its very uniform grain and the fact that it appears to be thin “leather” backed by nylon. As long as you understand what “genuine leather” means and you are fine with that, then you will most likely be satisfied with this wallet, as my husband is. He understands this wallet won’t be long-lived, and that’s OK with him. The credit card slots are sized right and my husband likes the flip-up holder because you can put your driver’s license in the mesh pocket and it won’t be visible to everyone unless you choose to flip up the holder. You can sort of see through the mesh, but if you’re being checked to see if you’re old enough to drink, you’ll most likely need to pull out your ID. Luckily, that’s easy to do.
