Can I use this for my gas fire to sit the coals on is it safe when fire in use

I would imagine so yes! It's just a ceramic wool.. none flammable, and heat resistant.. I would make sure you don't block your gas jets though! Keep them clear so the gas can come through...

Do you need to replace the wool with every use?

No, the wool stays in place and lasts for many uses. When eventually the wool becomes blackened it can be replaced.

can you use citronella gel with this?

Hi, I've never the gel before!. But all these are is ceramic wool.. very similar to fiber glass really But completely flame retardant.. so I would say Yes! Providing the gel is liquid enough ..
