DIY Level - Dangerous
When working on something that runs on 240VAC it's really important to do things safely. Turn Off the breakers to the compressor and the inside unit before doing anything. This fixed my AC problem. Couple weeks ago during a late night storm my AC quit working. Or at least the compressor wouldn't come on. Inside unit seemed to be Ok. The compressor unit is about 8-9 years old, so I at first figured it was the starting capacitor - changed it out for a new one - no luck. There was a possibility that the low-voltage wiring might be the problem - its about four decades old. Check it - it was good. So I ordered a new contractor unit, based on the model/part number of the old one - which has been discontinued. The new one didn't look anything like the old one. It was actually a two-pole one instead of a single-pole. So I ordered one of these - based on appearance and specifications. Took about a half hour to install. Flipped back On the breakers - crossed my fingers and turned on my AC. Compressor chugged to life and cool air commensed to blow. Yea! One hitch in all of this. The label on the new piece shows the wiring mirrored to what my old part shows. So I had to make a decision - flip the wiring or hook it up like the old part. Tough decision. I went with doing it the way the old one was wired. And that seems to worked Ok. Side note. Looking at the old part - there is a little cover on the front. Opening that up you can see the relay contacts. Both contacts were heavily carbonized. My guess is I could have simply cleaned those contact points up a bit and gotten a few more years out of it. But still, for the price a whole new part is better than an almost ten year old one. I'm happy with my purchase. Including a photo of my old part with the mirrored wiring.

Perfect Replacement-Upgrade Contactor
I have a 3-ton Amana A/C unit that is 23 years old. Over the past few weeks, I was aware of the HVAC system being Off, but that the compressor outside was still running, building frost on the cold side line. At first I just went to the Breaker Box and shut off the A/C breakers. Then I took the side cover off the A/C unit outside and "rapped" on the contactor. After 2 or 3 hits, the compressor shut off. In my case, the contactor was working well enough to turn On the unit, but the contacts would weld themselves tight together and not allow the unit to turn Off. This unfortunately caused many nights of poor sleep as I never knew when the next time the contactor would fail "On" again. As you are already aware, Amazon carries an exorbitant collection of contactors from which to choose, but I drilled my decision down to this Protactor contactor. In case you don't already know, basically all of these contactors are built with the same footprint and size, with the main differences being the coil operating voltage (24, 120, or 220VAC), the contactor (relay) contact ratings (from 25 to 40 Amp), and the number of poles that are required for the control circuit (1, 2, or 3). My contactor was a simple 1 pole circuit with a 24v coil and contacts rated @ 25 Amps for FLA (Full Load Amps). Therefore, if I can upgrade to a 40 Amp FLA contactor, it allows the contacts to live a much longer life with 60% greater contact area. I received this 40A Protactor within 2-days after ordering it and installed it right away. My A/C compressor and fan are now running better than ever! I really mean it! Before, with the worn out original contactor, the compressor used to literally groan and growl especially during the first few minutes of operating. Now, with the 40A Protactor in place, there is none of that, very smooth and quiet, as it should be. I thought I might need a new compressor, but now I realize that the old contactor was wasting energy across the contacts and not allow full voltage and current to the compressor unit. The A/C appears to also be running less in duration and less often, due to improved operation efficiency. My family is delighted and impressed that I was able to repair our A/C system with a part that cost less than $21 w/ Tax. Now no more worries about the contactor sticking in the On position! I totally recommend this contactor for anyone in a similar situation. It is worth its weight in gold!

Contactor fixed the A/C issue!
In case this can help anyone: Long story short, our A/C Thermostat went blank and turning on A/C would immediately short out 3-amp fuse in the attic. After replacing the 3-amp fuse and still having it short out, we figured the problem was outside at the unit. After researching, it appears the Contactor is most commonly the problem if the problem is outside at the unit. We replaced with this one (because it matched the specs of our current one) and voila! it fixed the problem! Be sure to take a picture of the way the wires get put on.

It works, but it has a short lifetime.
I replaced my AC's contractor in 2019 with this model, and it did work great until 2025. I just bought the same model, 2 of them this time so I have a spare on hand, to get back working. I will update based on the new one's performance, but the old one did only last 6 years. This is in line with other lower star reviews, and the failure mode was the coil. You can depress the test button and it conducts fine, but applying voltage to the switching coil does not activate it. I put a multimeter on the old one and my spare, the old/burned out one measures 0.9ohms on across the coil and the new one just over 14 ohms, so it clearly shorted out over time. It is either an environmental or a duty cycle issue, but at the cost I'm willing to deal with it if we are talking once or twice a decade...it keeps my old AC unit kicking.

My A/C company wanted to charge $350 for this part........ yeah....
If everything just stops working and your fuse in the blower unit is dead, then this is your culprit. I called my local A/C repair techs and he told me what happened, and that it happens a lot with Carrier and Carrier knock offs. He was very cool and told me what the issue was (this product) and that they charge more than 10x the price, plus labor. You can do this. I am going to start replacing this every six years. I replace my capacitor every two, but will bump that up to three to keep an even cycle. If you're not replacing your own $20 capacitor already... what are you doing? They go bad every 3-5 years, get on a cycle of just replacing it to save a service call.

It is Sealed from moisture and bugs
Looks well built and WATER proof. Fast shipment and hope it lasts 16 years like the one it is replacing.

Robust enclosure and by-pass test switch make this a no-brainer
Great option for the long haul. Very will protected and the by-pass test switch is extremely useful if you have to troubleshoot A/C issues.
