It's Better Than You Think
I think people misunderstand these boards and Expressif's instructions for setting them up makes things worse. I tried for two days under Linux and Windows and couldn't get them working right. Finally, I hooked one up with Arduino IDE running and it recognized it immediately. I get best results if I choose ESP32 S2 LOLIN from the list, as this is a clone of that board. For those saying WiFi doesn't work, there is no wifi on this board. This isn't intended for that. Stop giving bad ratings to an otherwise useful product. I have three of these. They still work after a year. I'll probably buy more soon. I'm actually setting them up for teaching robotics to children using robot car motors and L298N drivers, and using larger motor drivers and Nema 17 motors with them to CNC control a mini lathe. Great product, hard to get started with and little documentation that's user friendly to beginners. My friend who is an electrical engineer has help me a lot with these.

Constantly resetting. I returned them.
Using the tips in the reviews, I got them working, and uploaded code. The wifi was initially glitchy and would not connect. It seemed to settle down, but then they started constantly resetting. It may be the wifi part of the code again, but I can't tell because serial monitor resets too. Very frustrating. Clearly there are good and bad batches of these. I returned them. March 2026

WiFi STA Mode works well
I was worried about WiFi in light of some of the other reviews. In the Arduino environment, I use esp_wifi_set_protocol to configure WiFi to connect as either 80211.b or 80211.g. Itโs working well on this board, and Iโm getting good signal quality. As other Arduino users have mentioned, the first time the board is programmed, you have to hold the GPIO_0 button when releasing RESET to get the board into download mode. After programming the first time, I found that subsequent code downloads from Arduino IDE do not require using the GPIO_0 button. Also, I am able to program the board over WiFi using OTA.

How to repair broken bootloader.
Most likely you got a board that doesn't seem to work, you can probably see it on device manager under COM devices or in Linux using lsusb. I was able to fix it by holding 0 and RST then flashing combined.bin. once that was done I was able to see it as it was a drive, I uploaded circuit python for the minis2 and then proceeded to repeat the process once more but this time I installed mcropython. After that I was able to use and flash like any other esp32. Once flashed you may have to manually reset it by pushing the rst button. Best purchase for the price. Just takes a few extra steps to get up and running. And the footprint make it perfect for any project.

Your typical wemos clone. Very low cost.
Picked these up for general projects. They fire up and work. USB C ports are nice. These are clearly low cost clones of the Wemos boards but they seem to work ok. Build quality looks little low but given the price it's not bad. All of mine worked but a friend had trouble with his. Might be better to look for boards that have wroom modules as they'll probably have better signal quality in Wi-FI and BT.

Good for basic projects/inexpensive
Worked well for my project. Used the lolin s2 mini board package in the arduino ide program. I believe the lolin s2 board was part of the esp32 boards download from espressif. Im probably under using this board for my project, as i only use the usbc to upload code, test my wiring, put time limits on the device, and use the board as a way to help control my pots and 5v power supply. I don't really need the wifi or anything for my specific use. but for basic use, no issues

WiFi is completely broken
I went through 6 of these things (three from my original purchase, and three that Amazon sent as a replacement), and I found that WiFi was completely broken on every single one. After flashing with a basic ESPHome configuration, I found that they would successfully boot and scan for WiFi networks, but could not actually connect. I saw the following in the logs: [I][wifi:257]: WiFi Connecting to '[redacted]'... [W][wifi_esp32:494]: Event: Disconnected ssid='[redacted]' bssid=[redacted] reason='Auth Expired' [W][wifi:549]: Error while connecting to network. [W][wifi:585]: Restarting WiFi adapter... I've tried using different versions of both the Arduino and ESP-IDF frameworks, but to no avail. This is a network that hosts many other ESP devices, so I'm confident the issue is not with my network. Other reviewers suggested that these specifically have issues with WiFi transmission, and that indeed seems like what is happening here. And since WiFi connectivity is the whole point of ESP chips, this issue makes them mostly useless. Considering that both my original and replacement shipments were plagued by this issue, and other reviewers also reported it, it's clear that this is a design defect and not just a few bad boards.

My go to dev boards
This is the second dev board I have used. Before these, I used a few STM32 Blue Pills. I have since converted all my projects to run on ESP32 and love them. These boards are nice and compact when you want to put them into "production," and with headers soldered on, they work well on a breadboard.

works great the second time!
i thought it was broken when i first received it, tried plugging it in, different ways, tried a different cord, nothing. but then held the boot button, and from then on it worked great! feeling a little dumb now. most ESP32's have an external usb chip that boots as soon as you plug it in, these ones need to be put into bootloader mode before they will show at all! otherwise seems like great little chips, looking forward to some new projects!
