Perhaps the British did not produce the most successful tanks of the Second World War, but they certainly designed an extraordinary range of light, medium and heavy tanks along with many that were adapted for special purposes. This fascinating variety of military machinery is recorded in Pat Ware’s photographic history. Using a selection of wartime photographs - supported by some modern photographs of preserved vehicles – the book describes the origins of the tank in Britain during the First World War, looks at British tank development during the inter-war period and contrasts this with advances made elsewhere - in Germany, France, the USA and the Soviet Union. All of the British tanks that saw service during the Second World War are described, among them the cruisers (Crusader, Cromwell, Comet), the infantry tanks (Matilda, Valentine, Churchill) and the US imports (Stuart, Lee/Grant, Sherman). Finally, an extensive section is devoted to the so-called ‘funnies' - the tanks developed for crucial tasks like bridge-laying, mine-clearing, flame-throwing and amphibious operation. Pat Ware’s photographic survey of these tanks at war is an expert introduction to a key period in the history of British fighting vehicles. Review: great book on British armor - excellent book, easy reading, excellent pictures and information, Mr. Ware has another awesome book. Some photos may or may have been seen before Review: Amazing effort for country that loved ships and planes. - British was stuck with a strange series of choices in WWII. They rose to the occasion throughout, but so many things were thrust upon them, and choices had to be made. I admire how the book follows things in a sensible fashion, the photos are fine. It doesn't miss much, but I wish they might provide some info on British armored units. Fine otherwise.

Lots of pictures - don't know how rare they are but at least a person without an extensive library should find it adequate. Also has some pretty good though brief description of the British tanks.

Photo-Guide to British 'Heavy Metal' of World War II!
While Britain didn't produce many top-notch tanks in the Second World War, they certainly cranked out a variety of models. Part of Pen & Sword's IMAGES OF WAR series, Pat Ware's BRITISH TANKS, THE SECOND WORLD WAR provides a comprehensive guide to Brit light, medium, heavy and special-model tanks. Beginning with an opening chapter tracing British tank development from 1914 to 1939, Ware examines the different classes of tanks produced: light, cruiser, infantry, heavy, specials/engineer tanks/'funnies' and American tanks in British service. After a short description of the missions and development of that particular class, he describes the various models within the class. For example, the 'Cruiser Tanks' chapters describes 11 different designs including the A9, A10, A13, A13 Mk II, A13 Mk 111 Covenanter, A15 Crusader, A24 Cavalier, A27L Centaur, A27M Cromwell, A30 Challenger and A34 Comet. Each rates a 1-1 1/2 page write-up with accompanying photographs and diagrams. Most of the pix are manufacturers' shots, maybe a fifth are frontline pix and several are of restored models. Having little knowledge on wartime British AFVs, I found BRITISH TANKS, THE SECOND WORLD WAR to be an informative, interesting survey of British 'heavy metal.' The variety of tank models developed - and described in the book - is truly mind-boggling. I wish Ware had included an index but that's just me. Recommended.

Good book on all the different classes of British (and American) tanks used prior and into the 2nd World War, useful for basis and starting research.
