The Art of Kiki's Delivery Service: A Film by Hayao Miyazaki

I'm a BIG fan of Studio Ghibil, and even more so of Kiki's Delivery Service! So, when I discovered they sold art books, I knew I had to buy this! Well, what I can say about this purchase is that it definitely exceeded my expectations. It's a beautiful book, and even if you're not an "artsy" person, it'll get you admiring the work and effort that went into producing the movie. It's simply beautiful. If you know someone who loves watching Studio Ghibil movies, and loves Kiki's Delivery Service, get them this as a present!

I had to get it. This is one of my favorite movies (Hayao Miyazaki is a mad genius) and I love the drawings so much, as well as the history behind the film

This art book is pure magic – a treasure trove of never-before-seen concept sketches, background paintings, and production notes from Kiki’s iconic world. Every page feels like stepping into Miyazaki’s imagination.

The Art of Kiki's Delivery Service is a charming art book companion for the movie. Even though Miyazaki's the director, screenwriter and producer for this film, his art is surprisingly missing in this book. This time round, the main contributing artists are Shinji Otsuka, Yoshifumi Kondo and Katsuya Kondo. The art is still created using watercolours and they are very beautiful. The character designs by Katsuya Kondo are really cool. You can see the different variations of Kiki, her hairstyle, flying poses, expressions and the little mannerisms all captured. His lines and colours are very simple be he can create a really appealing cast of characters. Together with the two other artists Shinji Otsuka and Yoshifumi Kondo, they contribute the majority of the concept art in this book. And they all seem to draw in similar style for the storyboards. The background paintings for Corico are also marvelous. I love the idyllic setting. Much of the designs are actually inspired from Visby, a city on the Swedish island of Gotland. Looking at the paintings instantly triggers holiday mood. Unfortunately, these unsung heroes of background art aren't credited directly to their work, although a list of names are included at the back of the book. Most of the art have interesting comments by Miyazaki and the other artists. At the back, there's a section on basic camera techniques and how they are used in the film. And finally, there's the complete screenplay. Highly recommended for all fans of the film and Studio Ghibli. (There are more pictures of the book on my blog. This gorgeous full color, coffee-table book sized art book dives into the details and the artistic process of Kiki's Delivery Service. This is one of my favorite films and having some of the stunning backgrounds and visuals, along with character development and sketches, is just a beautiful way to re-connect with the film. I highly recommend this or a similar one for your favorite Ghibli movie to really dive into the art that makes these films so special. My copy arrived in new condition.

Great gift especially for young artists who like Ghibli movies. My animator husband yelled like a little boy when I got this for his birthday. The quality of these movies are phenomenal works of art so getting the inside scoop in these books is such a treat. I’m also an illustrator and the works are inspiring— needless to say, a perk of buying it for my husband is that I get to look at it too :) My teenage sister has been selling her art and loves this book as well.

Kiki's Delivery Service is my favorite Ghibli film, and l've been eyeing to get this for a really long time now. lt's full of amazing art and takes you through their character design process (you get to see many versions of Kiki and her hairstyles). lt also provides you lots of insight on their work process through the entire film; which includes all kinds of fantastic work. Each page is just awesome to look at and take in, especially if you're an artist too. Highly recommended for artists and Studio Ghibli fans; and a must have for both!

This book is so amazing and if you're really interested in art, this book is great. It even gives you the script of the movies in these Ghibli books! It came very quick too!

Un libro stupendo per tutti gli appassionati dello Studio Ghibli, ma forse in particolare per chi si interessa di disegno, illustrazione e/o animazione. Kiki consegne a domicilio è il mio lungometraggio Ghibli preferito, quindi sfogliare queste pagine ricchissime di schizzi, bozzetti e curiosità sulla realizzazione del film è davvero una goduria, mi ha fatto venire voglia di riguardarlo per l'ennesima volta! Il testo è in inglese, tra le varie curiosità vengono anche spiegate alcune cose di cui su internet si è molto discusso, ad esempio la perdita dei poteri di Kiki, e alla fine del libro una sezione in bianco e nero con pagine non patinate presenta l'intera sceneggiatura con fotogrammi, testi e dialoghi. Davvero completo e prezioso. Formato grande e copertina rigida molto robusta. Arrivato in condizioni perfette e perfino un po' in anticipo rispetto alla data di consegna. Sono molto molto soddisfatta! Consigliatissimo! ;-)

Fue un regalo de navidad para mi novio, él y yo adoramos la pelicular, pero creo que para él es bastante especial. Siempre he admirado el trabajo de Miyazaki y el estudio Ghibli y por las reseñas veo que es un gran libro, perfecto para inspirarte si eres un artista, especialmente si estudias animación cómo nosotros! Mi novio adoró el artbook, confío en sus palabras, es un libro precioso y vale su precio e incluso más honestamente. El único detalle es que me llegó con las esquinas algo maltratadas pero creo que eso es culpa de la paquetería de Amazon, no le pusieron plástico burbujas si quiera para protegerlo. El libro merece mucho mejor trato.
