worked well on thin sheet metal
We were working on a craft project that required holes through small sheet metal covers to mount solar lights. The holes were 11/16 inch diameter and these step bits cut a nice, clean round hole in the metal. The bits have angled shafts to prevent rotation in the drill chuck, and seem sturdy and sharp. For cutting something thicker, like wood, I think it would work easier to see clearly when the various step levels occur, because you have more resistance. But overall these worked great for our project, and a new addition to the variety of drill bits we need and use around our DIY projects.

Excellent - I'd give it 6 stars if I could
I'm not a professional carpenter but I always seem to be building and fixing things just the same. I have owned various tools, drills and drill bits over the years yet somehow I had never heard of a "step" drill bit.Where have I been?A need came about where I had to widen the diameter of some pre-existing 1/2" holes I had drilled in 20/24 gauge steel. These holes were being placed in the back walls of a Tennesco metal office drawer (B0057NFQWM ) - the back wall and the back of the drawer. So I attach this Neiko Titaniaum Step Drill bit to my Ryobi 9.6V cordless drill and to my amazement it quickly & effortlessly removes all the "slag" left over from the initial drilling attempt. It then widens the holes very quickly in progressively larger increments as I press the drill harder and just persist for a minute of drilling. I am impressed! This * EXACTLY * solved my installation problem. The fact that it does it's job so quickly and cleanly and I don't have to do any metal filing cleanup work made my day. It does not warp the metal either.Yes, it throws curlicue metal shavings around but that's a given. Easier to clean those up than the micro-fine metal filings from a conventional drill bit.TIP1: Since I started with a pre-existing pilot hole I cannot speak to whether this will work without a pilot hole. I suspect it would be * wise * to have * some * kind of basic pilot hole - even if it's 1/16 inch.TIP2: I did not use any lubricant's on the bit, but in retrospect, for the sake of bit longevity, it probably would have been a good idea.NOTE: My 9.6V cordless drill balked at doing the last two (widest opening) "steppings" but rather than getting out the electric powered drill, I said "good enough" at that point. The holes I had created were more than wide enough to feed Ethernet cables w/jacks through or 14/3 SJT cord - with a fair amount of remaining "slack" space.Highly recommended if you need to make clean holes in 20 to 24 gauge sheet metal.

Good
I purchased the NEIKO 10194A Titanium Step Drill Bit, and I must say I'm not extremely satisfied with its performance. This versatile tool has become an essential part of my toolkit for both woodworking and metalworking projects. What sets it apart from other step drill bits is its high-speed alloy-steel construction, which ensures durability and longevity. One of the standout features of this step drill bit is its ability to expand holes in various sizes. With 10 step sizes ranging from 1/4 inch to 1 3/8 inches, it covers a wide range of hole diameters, making it incredibly versatile. Whether I'm working on a small DIY project or a larger construction task, this drill bit has got me covered. The titanium coating not only enhances its durability but also ensures smooth and clean cuts through wood and metal. I've noticed that it reduces friction, which means less effort is required when drilling, making my work more efficient.I appreciate the precision and accuracy I can achieve with the NEIKO 10194A Titanium Step Drill Bit. It's designed to create clean and uniform holes, which is crucial for a professional finish. Plus, the ergonomic design of the bit makes it comfortable to handle during extended use.Overall, I highly recommend the NEIKO 10194A Titanium Step Drill Bit to anyone in need of a reliable and versatile drilling tool. It's made my projects easier, faster, and more enjoyable, and I couldn't be happier with the results it delivers. If you're looking for a high-quality step drill bit, this one should be at the top of your list.

Excellent performance for the $
This Neiko 10193A Titanium Step Dril Bit Set was a pleasant surprise! It was about one-fourth the cost of similar, better-known brand-name sets at the big box store, yet it worked perfectly well for my needs. I did not try the two smaller bits, but I used the largest step bit to drill ten 3/4" holes in 1/2" thick stainless flat bar to make backing plates for my boat's outboard engine bracket. Combined with the use of a good cutting fluid and a slow drilling speed (250 rpm), they steadily cut away the metal and resulted in very nicely cut holes. Because of the design of the bit, it even chamfered the edges of the holes nicely by just lowering the bit a tiny bit deeper to the next step up cutting size. Because the thickness of the steel was half-inch, I had to flip the bar to drill from the backside to finish each hole, as the depth of the 3/4" cutting "step" is less than 1/2" . No big deal. Worked great! For occasional or one-time use like this, these are IDEAL! You save a fortune and they cut great. I haven't tried the more expensive brand name bits, but I can't imagine they cut much better--certainly not four times better to justify their cost. If I had a lot of holes to drill in heavy materials, I'd probably just buy multiples of this set.

Keep a set of these in your toolbox. Drill clean holes in your Weber.
These are very sharp and they cut clean holes. I bought them initially to drill a hole into a porcelain-coated steel surface (a Weber grill actually which has a hard glass-like coating over the steel body). A regular twist drill bit would have shredded the coating around the hole and made a mess. First I made a small 1/8" pilot hole with a twist bit, then I kept the step cuts lubricated with a little oil. These cut very cleanly with no chipping of the porcelain coating. The cutting surface has a much shallower angle, instead of a sharp V as in a regular twist bit. This cutting profile reduces or eliminates the breakout around the hole. Each smaller step center acts as a built in pilot for the next larger cutting surface. I was able to incrementally and step-by-step slowly increase the size of the hole from the pilot 1/8" to the final size. I was very pleased.Next project was in wood to enlarge the holes in a guitar headstock from 5/16 to 3/8, without moving the existing center of the holes. These are perfect for the job. For deeper cuts (deeper than this bit's shoulder depth) as in my wooden headstock, I started the hole diameter with this step drill to get the perfectly centered hole, then I finished it to the final depth with the same sized Forstner bit.For the price these are great to have around instead of trying to rough out a hole to enlarge it. I keep these in my tool box close at hand so I will grab these and do it right when the job calls for it, instead of hacking with a regular drill bit.

My best buy ever in terms of tools
I used carbon drill bits to try to make holes in metal. It took me 45 minutes to make a small one. Saw this kind in Home depot but too expensive. Bought these ones in Amazon. Was doubtful when saw the cheap prize but got them anyway. My best buy ever in terms of tools. This drill bits are wonderful. Cut precise and really fast. Very durable and adjust well to my small Black and Decker drill. Made my first hole in less than a minute. They are good to drill and do not wooble when rotating. Only thing when using it if you want to make a bigger hole, sometimes you do not feel different sizes going thru. I had to stop and look which size of hole I was in. Also, when checking hole size, to retake the drilling, need to push really hard down or drill will fly off your hand. When taking out of the hole, make sure is still rotating or same thing will happen.Highly recommend this product. GREAT price and works beautifully. After a while bits might feel a bit dull so making holes might take a few more seconds. But I would buy them again in a bit.

Works great and worked good on metal sheets for roofs. Handy tool when you need it.
The drill bit worked great and made getting rid of the burrs on my metal roof easy when replacing all the screws. Hard to see when to stop when using a hand held drill , so easy to make it too big if not careful. Good tool to have in your tool box.
