Can this be used for any brand of NiMh batteries?

I can't say with certainty because I haven't used every brand, but I've used 3 or 4 and they all work ok. This is the most sophisticated charger I've seen in a while.

Is this charger made in Japan?

No, it says Made in China on mine, at least.

Will it charge the basic version of eneloop (white color)?

Yes. It worked well with all enloops.

Great. Best charger I've ever owned. Even revived some overly discharged batteries that would no longer charge
