Understanding and Using English Grammar (Third Edition) (Full Student Edition without Answer Key)

This is really an outstanding English grammar book. It explains grammar.in a way that ESL people will love: clear, to the point, and with excellent examples. I wish it included the answer key, which would make the book perfect. You can buy a (cheap) used book with the key just for the key, which I did, and the total cost of of both (this new book and the used book with key) is about half as much as that of a new book with key. When the book is a used one, it usually has writing and notes, but, believe me, the key section is always clean.

The geniuses that controlled my education decided that I should skip fourth grade reading because they caught me reading Mark Twain in third grade. I can't imagine what in the WORLD they were thinking, as I came to learn years later that in fourth grade reading they taught - you guessed it - grammar! And boy, did I suffer. My written grammar was absolutely horrendous for years, and even though I continued to be placed in advanced or honors English classes throughout high school, whenever my papers were returned to me the "concept" side came back with an A, and the "grammar" side came back with a D or an F. There's no substitute for learning young, but this is the closest thing to it. I've never seen a grammar book that's easier to understand than this one. Forget the Idiot's Guides or Dummies books, and invest a little more in this one and the accompanying workbooks. If you're really interested in boning up on your grammar skills, this will be of tremendous assistance. Also, if you're looking to buy the workbooks, remember that this is the THIRD edition, that it is in blue, and so you should conduct your search for the accompanying workbooks by first identifying those that are blue, and make sure that they're for the third edition. There are several editions available here on Amazon, so buy wisely.

There is a large class label on the cover, but otherwise the book is in good condition. A few pencil marks inside, but that was noted as a possibility in the description.

English is my second language and with this book my englsih grammar got better and while learning English, I was tutoring other international students and getting paid and passed TOEFL and graduated a college. Love this book n highly recommend

This book is quite helpful if you need to know about grammar rules for the English language. Betty Azar has so much experience as a teacher of ELLs that she is able to organize the information in a way that is easily accessible to grammar teachers and English Language Learners as well. Great reference material for all classroom teachers!
